About Honda SP 125

HMSI (Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India) launched its second BS-VI compliant motorcycle in India which was the SP 125. This came in two variants, namely the drum brake with CBS (combined braking system) and the front disc brake variant which also had CBS (combined braking system). The Honda SP 125 has already managed to attain sizable popularity amongst Indian buyers with its refined and high-performing fuel injected 125 cc engine that also gets eSP (enhanced smart power) technology from Honda. This basically lowers friction greatly within the engine’s moving parts and also maximises overall performance along with fuel economy. The silent-start ACG starter enables starting the engine in a quiet manner while the fuel-injection system has 8 sensors which continually inject optimum air and fuel mixture while maintaining the optimum engine temperature at the same time. Alongside, the offset crank and rocker arm has needle bearing fitted for lowering frictional losses within the engine too. The engine makes 10.70 bhp at 7,500 RPM and 10.90 Nm of maximum torque at 6,000 rpm.

The new Honda SP 125 looks larger this time around, owing to it being taller, wider and longer as compared to the Honda CB Shine SP. There is the LED headlamp unit with an edgy and sharper design while there are sculpted and sharper extensions for the fuel tank along with stylish graphics. There are 5-spoke split alloy wheels with a new look while a facelift has been given for the tail lamp portion too. The exhaust muffler also comes with a part-shield in chrome for that premium touch. The Honda SP 125 comes with a segment-first ACG starter motor along with possessing new switchgear and integrated pass switch in tandem with low/high beam on the left side handlebar. The right handlebar comes with the engine start/stop switch while there is a fully digital new instrument cluster. This comes with several readouts like two trip meters, real-time fuel efficiency, distance to empty, average fuel economy, gear position indicator and eco mode indicator. There are drum and disc brake variants of the motorcycle.

Honda SP 125 Expert Review

Honda SP 125

The mileage king, Honda SP 125, breathes cleaner to comply with the new carbon emission regulations. Inspired by the exclusive commuter, CB Shine SP, the SP 125 lives up to the premiumness of the previous Honda models in the segment of commuter motorcycles. It is not only frugal to ride, but also boasts dynamic features along with new colours, bodywork and graphics. It is Honda Motor’s first ever motorcycle to be BS6 compliant and comes in two standard variants. The bike is well-liked by Indian buyers for its high-performing and refined engine. The fuel economy of the bike is perhaps the main reason for its growing popularity in India.

How is the design?

The Honda SP 125 flaunts a revised appearance that is visibly longer, taller and wider, compared to the previous CB Shine SP. The eye-catching edgy contours and sculpted structure endow a beast-inspired styling to the bike. Moreover, the sharpness of the LED headlight, the sculpted extension of its graphic fuel tank, and the protruding tail lamps add to the sportiness of the bike. The five-spoke alloy wheels with metallic disc brakes and the fully digitalised console that comes with real-time fuel indicator, eco indicator, service reminder, and gear-positioning indicator besides other general information, give a touch of premiumness to the bike. The engine-kill switch added to the bike is in fact, a segment-first aspect of the bike. The bike’s exhaust muffler is coupled with a shield having a semi-chrome finish to make it look classier. Additionally, the bodywork of the bike having a combination of chrome and matte finishing is something admirable.

How is the performance?

The Honda SP 125 is powered by an upgraded 125cc unit which is totally BS6 compliant along with fuel injection. The transmission duties of the bike are still operated by a standard five-speed gearbox. The motorcycle is further equipped with AC Generator for a smoother cranking of the engine. This is a significant feature which makes riding more comfortable and enhances the on-road experience. This version of the Honda bike is also geared with an eSP technology for reducing friction within the moving parts of the engine. This improves the overall performance of the bike and maximises its fuel economy. The engine has the capacity of producing 10.07 bhp of power at 7500 rpm and can obtain a maximum torque of 10.90 Nm at 6000 rpm.

How does the Honda SP 125 ride?

The 124-cc engine carried by the Honda SP 125 now has longer stroke, slightly increased compression ratio of 10:0:1 and smaller bore. However, these modifications do not translate to any noticeable difference while riding the bike. The refinement of the engine is something prominent and the rev range is pretty high, therefore little vibrations and gravelly notes are barely felt. The engine is smoother than before and something to look forward to. The gearbox of the Honda bike remains the very same as before and delivers smoother output than the standard 4-speed gearboxes used by general commuting bikes.

How comfortable is the Honda SP 125?

While Honda SP 125 delivers an overall decent on-road performance, there are some aspects that are slightly disappointing. For example, the handling of the bike is functional and works according to the size of the bike’s tyres. Honda provides R 18 tyres (80/100) at both rear and front for this model, thereby contributing to its superior fuel efficiency. However, this is observable in accordance with the handling. While handling the machine on broken roads, the front tyre tends to deflect from the original line of direction and becomes difficult to move. The stopping power and braking controls are pretty good. However, the bike feels more stable and confident because of the wider rubber at both ends.

How's the tech?

The Honda SP 125 boasts a rather longer list of technical features than most of the rival bikes at this price range. Similar to the BS6 Activa 125, the Honda SP 125 comes with an LED headlamp and silent-start mechanism. The fully digitalised console of the bike displays significant information such as real-time fuel indicator, eco indicator, service reminder, and gear-positioning indicator besides other general information. These features contribute to the comfort and convenience of the rider. A new switchgear has been included in it along with a pass switch in the tandem. The left-handlebar has a high/low beam switch and the right handlebar has a switch for starting and stopping the engine. The engine has been cranked and the starter motor barely creates a gear-meshing sound.

How's the mileage of the Honda SP 125?

The average mileage of the Honda SP 125 is a stunning 65 kmpl, thanks to the fuel economy mechanism of the bike.

Is the Honda SP 125 good value for money?

Honda has smartly crafted the SP 125 with the revised features and the noticeable styling tweaks. This proves that this bike goes beyond a mere BS6 upgrade. The drum variant of the bike costs around 72,900, while the disc variant costs around 77,100. This is slightly higher than the BS4 Shine SP and justifiable on the ground that it transitioned into BS6. Overall, this bike is a mileage bike and loaded with features and one cannot ask for more at this price.

How is the after sales service?

For all the bS6 motorcycles and scooters, Honda has the same service schedule, i.e., one free service after 15-30 days or upon covering 750-1000 km, second one after 165-80 days or upon covering 5500-6000 km and the third one after 350-365 days or upon covering 11500-12000 km. Paid services are granted after every 180 days or 6000 km.

Which motorbikes compete in this segment?

The most popular rival motorbikes of the Honda SP 125 are Honda Shine, TVS Raider, Bajaj Pulsar 125 Neon and Hero Glamour xtec. These bikes are slightly higher in price than the Honda SP 125.

Verdict (Value for money)

The Honda SP 125 is a good value for money proposition. This bike is an excellent city commuter and good on long hauls. It gives a stunning mileage of 65 kmpl and has a maximum speed of 100 kmpl.

Final Verdict on SP 125

Where Honda scores with the SP 125 is that not only does it breathe cleaner to meet the new emission regulations, but the SP 125 boasts of a long list of features to justify its all-new tag, and has brought a new sense of premium-ness to the 125 cc commuter motorcycle segment. It has good performance for a 125 cc commuter motorcycle, will be frugal to run, and even in the looks department, it scores high with its updated bodywork, graphics and new colours

All You Need to Know About the SP 125

One of the earliest updated BS VI models from Honda that came to India was the Honda SP 125. The bike was renamed to simply the SP 125 from the Honda CB Shine SP 125 nameplate earlier. Many new features were added to the bike upon its launch while a BS-VI compliant engine was also introduced with the update.

The Honda SP 125 comes with a 125 cc fuel injected and air cooled engine that dishes out 10.70 bhp at 6500 rpm and 10.90 Nm of maximum torque at 6000 rpm. This is quite similar to the previous version although the BS VI engine and electronic fuel injector have transformed the engine. A cooling jet has been newly made and this helps in spraying engine oil into the cylinder piston and sleeve. Since the motorcycle is basically a commuter motorcycle that is expected to run on a daily basis in congested traffic, it makes use of air cooling for managing heat and the cooling jet is a useful addition to the motorcycle likewise. The Honda SP 125 also comes with a fully digital instrument console. This digital instrument cluster displays speed and gear position while the fuel tank range readout is also available as a new addition. Honda has also revamped the starter switch and the switchgear has been given a more compact touch by fusing the engine kill switch and starter together. There is a new starter motor which does away with the gear meshing noise completely when the engine is cranked. This is a similar technology as witnessed in the BS VI Honda Activa. Mild styling changes have been witnessed for the Honda SP 125. It now comes with a full LED headlight which is a first in this segment. The fairing design is edgier than before while new decals are also present. This makes for a more refreshing appearance by all means. The fuel tank also has extensions along with fresher decals for creating a similar effect. Fit and finishing is highly impressive as anticipated from Honda. The SP 125 may well have the finest build quality in this market category. The feel for levers and switches is tactile and paint finishing is very attractive as well. All cycle parts and panels have been fused well and Honda has ensured that the SP 125 handles well, particularly over rough roads, tackling potholes effectively. The ride quality is firmer than what is desirable although the executive commuter bike does manage to shine. The new engine is more refined than before while bottom-end performance is also considerably smoother than earlier. It is linear in nature and the SP 125 is impressive with regard to the grunt at the midrange owing to the delivery of good linear power along with adequate spacing for the gear ratios. Performance may taper a bit at the top end while the bike may not feel as powerful after 90 Kmph on its speedometer. The engine is really smooth and does not have any knocking sound even when you suddenly halt while in second gear. The gearbox feels really smooth too while the clutch lever is on the lighter side. Gear shifts and changes are really accurate and buttery which is a delight to use. Ride quality should have been more pliant and the SP 125 has a stiffer suspension setup for a commuter bike. This is felt often on broken roads and poor stretches. A softer suspension setup may have helped without compromising overtly on overall handling. Where the Honda SP 125 disappoints is in relation to its overall handling. This is basically dependent upon the size of the tyre. Honda has provided 80/100 R18 tyres at both rear and front owing to its aim to ensure better fuel economy and this is visible in terms of overall handling of the bike. When riding on broken roads, the front wheel deflects clearly from its directional line and this is quite easy although slightly wider rubber at both rear and front makes the bike quite stable and aids rider confidence greatly. Braking abilities are also impressive with the front 240 mm disc and the rear 130 mm drum brake. They are linked via CBS and there is good stopping power overall.
