Maruti Suzuki S-PRESSO: A Review Under the Safety Lens

The Maruti Suzuki S-PRESSO, a compact and popular choice among Indian consumers, has been assessed for safety by Global NCAP, reflecting a spotlight on its safety quotient in the ‘Safer Cars for India’ campaign.

The Ratings Explained

The Maruti Suzuki S-PRESSO has been evaluated under the strict and more rigorous safety protocols of Global NCAP, where it received a 1-star rating for adult occupant protection, scoring 20.03 points out of a possible 34. This starkly indicates the necessity for significant enhancements in the vehicle’s structural safety and occupant protection systems. For child occupant protection, the S-PRESSO unfortunately did not earn any stars, achieving only 3.52 points out of a potential 49, calling attention to critical improvements needed in the child safety domain.

Adult and Child Occupant Protection

The S-PRESSO’s structural performance in crash tests raised concerns, especially in the frontal offset barrier test, where the driver’s chest received poor protection and the feet area was rated as weak. The absence of a manufacturer-recommended child restraint system (CRS) and a forward-facing child seat resulted in poor head and chest protection for the child, leading to the zero-star rating. These outcomes underscore the paramount need for reinforcing the car’s safety structure and offering better protection for all passengers, regardless of age.

Safety Assist Technologies

- Airbags: To shield occupants in the event of a collision.

- ABS (Anti-lock Braking System): To prevent wheel lock-up and maintain control during sudden braking.

- Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD): To optimize braking effectiveness by distributing force proportionally.

Additional Safety Features

FeatureDescription
Electronic Stability ProgramImproves vehicle’s stability by managing traction.
Engine ImmobilizerSecures the vehicle against unauthorized use.
Child Safety LockKeeps the rear doors secure from the inside.
Speed Alert SystemAlerts the driver upon reaching set speed limits.

In Summary

The safety performance of the Maruti Suzuki S-PRESSO, as per Global NCAP’s stringent protocols, indicates a crucial area for improvement, especially in child occupant protection. The 1-star rating for adult occupant protection and a 0-star rating for child safety highlight the need for advancements in vehicle safety features and structural integrity, echoing Global NCAP’s call for heightened safety measures in vehicles catering to the Indian market.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is one of the best options for those looking for a micro-SUV of a hatchback. This means a hatchback that performs reasonably well while sporting a design that is reminiscent of a bigger SUV.

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso looks inspired by bigger SUVs with its taller body and dual-split bumpers along with its upright stance and neat tail lamps that go into the fenders, making it appear wider than it actually is. It also gets reasonable wheel arches with side body cladding, raised door sills and 180 mm of ground clearance. The proportions are not all SUV-like and this may hinder road presence considerably, especially at the rear. The wheels feel smaller even though higher trims have 14-inchers. There is also a lack of proportion. The rear looks good enough although the overall effect may seem polarizing and awkward to some.

Petrol1.0 litre 68 PS 90 Nm

The S-Presso gets the time-tested 1.0 litre K10B petrol engine that dishes out 68 PS and 90 Nm of maximum torque. There is also a manual transmission system with the AGS option. The manual is light and shifts nicely while the AGS also responds swiftly towards any down-shifting. The acceleration quotient is better with the latter although the up-shifting may not always be a pleasant experience. The engine is quite punchy however and likes its revs. However, it does get noisy when you go for those hard revs. The engine is fuel efficient though and performs decently on city roads.

21.4-21.7 kmpl is the claimed mileage for the S-Presso.

The S-Presso handles reasonably well and has a good turning circle which makes it easy to handle and maneuver in traffic. It does decently on the highway with good braking levels and stability. The light steering has a vague feeling at higher speeds although the ground clearance takes care of some rough patches decently. The car may also have a floating effect at higher speeds which could sometimes be disconcerting. However, this is not a car that you will be pushing to its limits.

Pros

  • Bold Tall-Boy Design
  • Spacious Cabin
  • Offers Good Fuel Efficiency

Cons

  • Fit And Finish Not The Best
  • Could Do With A More Powerful Engine
  • Styling And Features Could Have Been Better

Verdict

The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso has a decently performing 998 cc engine which churns out 67 BHP of maximum power along with peak torque of 90 Nm which offers good drivability, especially on city roads The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is reasonable value for money, if you are looking for a nicely performing and relatively spacious entry-level offering that is more like an SUV in terms of its look, feel and height.
