Former Tata Sons Chairman Cyrus Mistry passed away on September 4, 2022, in an accident near Mumbai. The untimely death of the business head has been a shock for the corporate sector but it's also raised points about road safety and the need to wear seatbelts at the front and back. In light of the same, Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, tweeted the need to wear seatbelts in a vehicle, saying "we owe it to our families." According to recent reports, early investigations reveal that Mistry was not wearing a seatbelt when the car crashed after the driver lost control of the speeding vehicle. Mistry was seated in the rear seat of the vehicle.

Anand Mahindra tweeted, "I resolve to always wear my seat belt even when in the rear seat of the car. And I urge all of you to take that pledge too. We all owe it to our families."
Cyrus Mistry was travelling with Jehangir Pandole, who was seated next to him and also died in the car accident. Anahita Pandole, Mumbai-based gynaecologist and a friend of Mistry was at the wheel with her husband Darius Pandole in the front passenger seat. Both are currently admitted to the hospital. The accident occurred when Pandole's Mercedes-Benz GLC lost control and crashed into a divider around 2.30 pm at Charoti in the Palghar district.
Officials said that the curtain airbags did not open for Cyrus Mistry and Jahangir Pandole since both occupants were not wearing their respective seatbelts. The investigation shows that the car tried to overtake another vehicle from the wrong side and hit a road divider on a bridge over the Surya river.

Police officials are currently analysing the footage captured from CCTV cameras near the spot to investigate if the car had any mechanical issues. The forensic team is also said to have collected samples from the accident site.
Cyrus Mistry was appointed as the sixth chairman of Tata Sons in December 2012, taking over from Ratan Tata after his retirement. However, Mistry was ousted from the position in October 2016. Mistry is survived by his wife Rohiqa and their two sons.
