Dr Andreas Lauermann, President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited, said, "We are following a long term investment plan in India and with our latest investment we have reaffirmed our confidence in the growing automotive market. This is the second step of investment after the Engine Assembly Plant a year ago. Additionally, we will continue to invest further in increasing our productivity and efficiency."

With an increased focus on the needs of the Indian market, the carmaker will start production of the new sub-compact sedan at the Volkswagen Pune Plant in the first half of 2016. Additionally, the new investment will also cover installation of new equipment and ramping-up of production at the Chakan facility.
The new Volkswagen sub-compact sedan will be underpinned by the same platform as that of the Volkswagen Polo. With that being said, reports claim the new VW sedan will also get some design cues and engine options from the Polo hatchback.
