We've already shown you spy pictures of the 2016 Toyota Fortuner and though they were quite hazy, the new ones show exactly what the car will look like. The Fortuner has been on sale in India since 2009, and has quite the fan following, thanks to its muscular and rugged looks. So what does the car promise in its new-gen avatar?
Like we said earlier, the design language adopted by Toyota gives the Fortuner a leaner and sleeker look. This strategy has mostly worked for off-roaders from other manufacturers too.
At the front are sleeker wrap around head-lamps that look pretty much like the ones on the Camry. Then, there is the V-shaped twin-slat grille with a whole lot of chrome. The chin of the front bumper and the fog-lamp surrounds too come with a dash of chrome, while day time running LEDs are also a part of the package.
The side profile of the new Fortuner reveals a bit more muscle too with big wheel arches and turn indicators on the ORVMs. The 2016 Fortuner is based on Toyota's Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform that also underpins the Hilux pick-up truck and the Innova. It will continue to employ the ladder frame chassis. Toyota is planning big changes for the interior of the car too, which means that it will be comparatively more plush and will get more room this time.

The rear profile of the car is sleeker with the tail lamps nicely wrapped around the boot lid. The chrome continues on the rear too, and this bit is familiar since current generation of the car also sports the chrome strip.
As far as engines go, there will be changes in that department too; the next-gen Fortuner will be equipped with the new GD series of engines. Two engines - the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel (148bhp) and the 2.8-litre (175 bhp) - will replace the current 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre versions. Toyota will employ these engines for the next-generation Innova too.
The new Fortuner will be unveiled this month in Thailand, and will make its way to India at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. In terms of competition, the Fortuner will rival the Hyundai Santa Fe, the new Ford Endeavour, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the Chevrolet TrailBlazer. We expect it to be priced between Rs. 22 lakh - Rs. 25 lakh.
