The 2022 Toyota Starlet, which is sold as the Glanza in India, has been launched in South Africa at a starting price of SAR 226,200 (Rs. 11.26 lakh). The car recently received a major makeover in India, and now the company has introduced the updated model in South Africa as well. Now the car itself is based on the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which was launched in February 2022, and is produced at Suzuki's Gujarat plant both for domestic sales as well as export markets. In fact, we were the first ones to tell you that the second generation of the Baleno hatch will once again be made only in India but sold in most markets under the Toyota badge only.

Now, the India-spec Toyota Glanza, which gets a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual or an AMT unit. However, the model sold in South Africa is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 103 bhp and 138 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 4-speed automatic torque converter unit. Now the engine and transmission setup is the same that you get with the Toyota Urban Cruiser, which itself is the re-badged version of Maruti Suzuki's Vitara Brezza.
Visually, the Starlet is identical to the Toyota Glanza sold in India, featuring the new slimmer grille with redesigned sweptback headlamps, new LED DRLs, and a much bolder-looking front bumper with heavy cladding, a larger airdam and chrome accents. The alloy wheels are also new, and the rear section too gets a set of new LED taillamps and a revised rear bumper.

The cabin too has been updated and got a new, more upmarket look. Updates include a new flat-bottom steering wheel, revised instrument cluster, and redesigned dashboard. The central area is dominated by the new larger infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features include - rear park distance control, cruise control, a reverse camera, a push-start ignition, auto climate control and more. In terms of safety, the car gets 2 airbags as standard, while the top-spec model gets 6. Other features include ABS with brake assist, ISOFIX, Hill-Assist Control, Vehicle Stability Control and others.
