Energy solutions company, Amara Raja Power Systems Ltd. (ARPSL), has recently received a contract from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to set up India's first green hydrogen fuelling station in Leh. The pilot project is being set up in the extreme conditions of Leh, at an altitude of 3,600 metres above sea level. ARPSL says that this project will be part of the National Hydrogen Energy Mission, which will lead to large-scale green hydrogen mobility and storage projects. The learning from this will also be useful for deploying similar fuel stations across India.
Amara Raja says that this development is in line with the Government of India's vision of achieving net-zero carbon emission by 2070. In fact, NTPC plans to roll out five hydrogen fuel cell buses in Leh. The company believes that the completion of this project will usher in a new era of emission-free transport in and around Leh while allowing India to be among the few countries to take lead in this green mobility space.

Vikramadithya Gourineni, Executive Director at Amara Raja told PTI, "The potential for hydrogen as an energy source of the future is substantial and projects such as these are critical to showcase this." The company explains that green hydrogen is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, using an electrolysis process powered by electricity generated by renewable energy sources. The hydrogen produced in this manner will leave no carbon footprint.

"This challenging project will reaffirm our EPC expertise, and we are very excited about being the first to enter the green hydrogen infrastructure space," added, Dwarakanadha Reddy, Business Head of the EPC division at Amara Raja.
In this pilot project, Amara Raja will be producing 80kg per day of 99.97 per cent pure hydrogen which will be compressed, stored, and dispensed from the fuel station in Leh.
