Ather Energy is one of the leading electric two-wheeler manufacturers in India. While it doesn't have a model on sale yet, pretty soon it will be launching the highly anticipated Ather 340 in India. In fact, we are hoping to ride the scooter soon as well. Along with Hero Electric and Okinawa, Ather Energy promises to propel the scooter segment towards electrification in India. In fact, Hero MotoCorp even invested close to Rs. 205 crore in Ather Energy and holds approximately 26 - 30 per cent shares of the company. Their first model, the S340 has been a long time coming. Ather Energy says that the S340 electric scooter can have a range of approximately 60 kilometres on single charge. The scooter gets a 'battery management system' which monitors the overall status of the battery and the range it offers. The battery is water and dust proof and sits underneath the floorboard for a low centre of gravity.

The Ather S340 gets a 5kW brushless DC electric motor which churns out about 6.4 bhp and 14 Nm of peak torque, more than any other regular, petrol powered scooter sold in India. The scooter has a top speed of 72 kmph and the company says that a 0-40 kmph sprint is done in about five seconds or so. This means that you will need to register the scooter and also have a valid driving license to ride it as well.

Ather will offer a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen on the S340 which will offer the regular information such as vehicle range, speed, trip meters and can also help the rider to navigate via maps. The scooter will be connected to your smartphone and offer other features such as over the air updates, diagnostics and so on.

The Ather S340 gets a fast charging system which can charge up to 80 per cent of the battery within an hour. A regular 5 ampere socket is what it takes to charge the scooter. Ather says that the battery can last up to 50,000 kilometres. The battery will need to be replaced after the 50,000 kilometres mileage. The scooter will also have a low speed reverse gear along with LED lights.
