According to the latest data published by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association (SIAM), the India auto sector has recorded an overall growth of 14.68 per cent in June 2021 selling 12,96,807 units as compared to 11,30,744 units sold in the same month last year. Showing signs of recovery, the passenger vehicle segment recorded a robust triple-digit growth of 119.31 per cent at 231,633 units against 105,617 units sold in June 2020. That said, the growth is primarily attributed to a low base last year owing to the COVID-19 outbreak as majority states were still under lockdown.
Passenger Vehicles have recorded growth across segments.
At 1,21,379 units the cars segment recorded 118.71 per cent growth as compared to 55,497 units sold a year ago. Sales of Utility Vehicles (UVs) too went up by 118.09 per cent selling 100,760 units as compared to 46,201 units sold last year. The Vans category too recorded an uptick of 142.28 per cent selling 9495 units as compared to 3919 units sold a year ago. Coming to two-wheeler sales, the segment recorded a growth of 4.03 per cent selling 10,55,777 units as compared to 10,14,827 units sold in the same month a year ago. The three-wheeler segment is the only one that witnessed decline in sales. Selling 9,397 units, it recorded a slump of 8.7 per cent when compared to 10,300 units sold a year ago.

Many OEMs shut down their manufacturing plants to make oxygen available for medical purposes. They also contributed towards augmenting oxygen supply to hospitals, supporting health care facilities and helping local communities. Due to various lockdowns, many dealers could not operate, leading to subdued sales. Lately, with ease in restrictions, OEMs have carefully resumed operations in a phased manner. We are thankful to the Government for improving the rate of vaccination in the country, rolling out a fiscal stimulus package for the worst hit sectors and including wholesale and retail trades under MSMEs. Two-wheelers recorded growth in sales on cumulative basis.
On cumulative basis, 6,46,272 units of passenger vehicles were sold in the April-June period, recording a de-growth of 320.38 per cent when compared to 1,53,734 units sold in the same period a year ago. Two-wheelers recorded a growth of 85.67 per cent selling 24,03,591 units in the same period as compared to 12,94,509 units sold a year ago. Sales of three-wheelers went up by 91.03 per cent selling 24,376 units as compared to 12,760 units sold a year ago.
