Promoting adoption of electric vehicles has been one of the key focus areas for the Delhi government and the national capital has already recorded the highest EV registration in our country. A lot of credit also goes to the initiatives taken by the Delhi EV Forum like giving scrapping incentives and expediating setting up of charging infrastructure. Now the state has also announced free charging for EV owners from June 01 between 12 noon and 3 PM at over 40 public chargers.
Free charging will be provided at around 35 charging stations.
This initiative has been taken up by an EV charging startup ElectriVa, which has set up over 40 public charging stations in partnership with the three civic bodies. Free charging will be provided at around 35 charging stations operational along the ring road at locations including South Extension, Bikaji Cama Place, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Mayur Vihar, Netaji Subhash Place, South Campus, Nelson Mandela Road, Hauz Khas, Green Park, Greater Kailash, Punjabi Bagh, Rohini, Saket, Shalimar Bagh, Preet Vihar among others. Normally, rates for EV charging during the morning and evening hours for per unit charge is kept at around Rs 10.
ElectriVa will also set up a charging station every three kilometres in Delhi and locations have already been allotted by the three civic bodies. This will further help in faster adoption of EVs. Around 10 per cent of the total vehicles purchased in the city this year in the January - March are electric vehicles. As many as 10,707 electric vehicles were registered in 2022 so far between January and March 14 including 5,888 units of e-two wheelers.
