July has been a great month for the Germans. First they bagged the FIFA World Cup and then Nico Rosberg decided to add to their celebrations by winning the German Grand Prix. Nico Rosberg took a comfortable victory at Hockenheim as home supporters roared as he went past the finishing line.
But it was not the only Mercedes car to finish on the podium. Lewis Hamilton (who was to start in 15th place but a gearbox change resulted into a penalty) recovered from 20th on the grid to third place. So, from the start, he never really posed a threat to Nico's chances of winning the race.
But all eyes were on William's Valtteri Bottas who braved the attack from Hamilton and did not let him pass. Bottas looked like he wouldn't be able to defend his position, however managed to find better traction coming out of the hair pin than Hamilton.
Even Team Mercedes made a radio call to Hamilton saying that he had the pace to finish second. But the ageing supersoft tyres did not help Hamilton's cause and though he tried everything to get past Bottas, the Williams driver managed to hold him off.
Sebastian Vettel was fourth but over 20s behind the second Mercedes, with Fernando Alonso holding off Daniel Ricciardo for fifth place by less than 0.1s at the line. Nico Hulkenberg took seventh ahead of the two McLarens of Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen, while Sergio Perez scored the last point in tenth.
Bottas was back on the podium for the third time after the Austrian and the British Grand Prix. Williams would have hoped for Massa to be there too but he was involved in a spectacular accident with an aggressive Kevin Magnussen and retired after having started third.
There were two more retirements other than Massa. Daniil Kvyat pulled off at the hairpin with his car on fire and the other when Adrian Sutil spun in to retirement on the pit straight - both of which didn't see the safety car back on the track.
