The gigantic Himalayan ranges gives us access to some beautiful and high mountain passes, which includes the highest motorable roads in the world - the Umling La Pass. These passes not only facilitate trade, movement and migration, but also offer scenic views and adrenaline rush to the adventure seekers. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) constructed the world's highest motorable pass in the Ladakh region named Umling La. The pass was officially opened last year, and is at an elevation of 19,024 feet above sea level. It stretches up to 86 km and connects Chisumle and Demchok villages, located 230 Kms from Leh. The road connects the important towns in Chumar sector of eastern Ladakh and it will help local population as it offers an alternate direct route connecting Chisumle and Demchok from Leh. It will enhance the socio-economic condition and promote tourism in Ladakh.

Dungri La, also known famously as Mana Pass, has been at war with Khardung La over gaining a reputation as the highest motorable pass in the world. However, due to its military restrictions, the pass is non-accessible to civilians. Hence, Khardung La takes the accolade despite being much lower than Dungri La that is situated at an altitude of 18406ft. But, Dungri La boasts of the most spectacular views and since it is out of bounds for civilians, it is also cleaner than other touristy passes in the country.

Located in the Changthang region of Ladakh, Photi La is one of the least frequented passes by tourists. Sitting at an altitude of 18124 feet, this pass requires a special permit from the army for civilians to pass through it. The 30km Photi La road to the pass starts in Hanle village and offers amazing scenery and a landscape view of the Hanle valley.

Khardung La is undoubtedly the most famous motorable pass and destination in India. And, for many reasons. Firstly, at 17,582ft, it is the second highest motorable pass in the world that can be accessed by civilians. Secondly, it lies in the most popular tourist destination of the country, Ladakh. Thirdly, it is the gateway to the beautiful Nubra valley. But, the primary reason for it to attract hundreds of people every day is the treacherous yet beautiful road leading to it from Leh. It is said to be one of the most scenic drives in the country.

Chang La is the fourth highest motorable pass in the world. The pass connects Leh to the spectacular Pangong Tso in Ladakh. The arid landscape, snow-capped peaks and panoramic views are the selling points of this pass that sees several tourists on a daily basis. Located at an altitude of 17,590ft, Chang La pass makes for a beautiful destination to stop and sip on some tea before heading towards Pangong lake.
Wari La is yet another scenic pass that is situated in the Nubra valley of Ladakh. However, due to the terrible road leading to it, the pass only attracts experienced adventure-seekers and daredevils. Landslides, avalanches, heavy snowfall and lack of oxygen along this route are major attributing factors for it being a remote and less frequented route in the country. But, it offers spectacular views if you dare to look up from the road.
