Ford has recalled 350,000 units of the F-150, Expedition, F650 and the F-750 in North America for a rectifying a potential unseated gear shift cable clip. The affected F-150 and the Expedition models have a 10-speed automatic transmission while the F-650 and the F-750 models have a six-speed automatic transmission. The clip locks the gear shift cable to the transmission unit may not be seated, and over a period of time, this could lead to the gearbox to be in a different position than what the driver has actually selected with the gear shift knob.
For example, the driver may have selected the 'park' position with the gear shifter knob and the transmission actually might be in neutral. This could result in vehicle movement which can lead to injury or crash. There has been accident and injury as a result of this issue that has been reported to Ford.
(The Ford Expedition was a part of the recall for unseated cable clip in the transmission unit)The number of vehicles recalled in USA is 292,909 while 51,742 cars will be recalled in Canada and 2,774 vehicles will be recalled in Mexico. The affected F-150 models were built between January 2017 and February 2018 at the Dearborn plant and the Kansas City plant.
The Ford Expedition units were manufactured between April 2017 and January 2018 at the Kentucky plant while the F-650 and the F750 models were manufactured between April 2017 and the March 2018 at Ford's Ohio plant. Once the recall starts, dealers will inspect and confirm the proper/improper installation of the cable locking clip. If unseated, the mechanics will rectify the same free of cost to the customer.
(The Ford Mustang is also a part of the second recall)Apart from the recall that you read above, Ford has also issued a separate recall for 161 models which were fitted with the company's 10R80 transmission unit. The 161 models that were recalled include the F-150, Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and the Mustang. The transmission has a missing rolling pin, which attaches the 'park' rod to the transmission case. If used repeatedly, the car in question might lose the 'park' function fully, even if the gear shifter is in the park mode and the instrument display is showing park mode. Without the parking brake applied, the car could roll and result in a crash and/or injury. Ford will fix the problem free of cost in the affected vehicles. Also, there has been no accident or injuries due to this issue so far.
