Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has commenced deliveries of the new Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin with an overwhelming market response. In just two months since the Africa Twin was launched in India, the first 50 bikes have already been sold out. Honda Wing World dealerships are accepting bookings for the Honda Africa Twin and the next lot of deliveries is expected within the next couple of months. For India, Honda has introduced only the top-of-the-line Africa Twin with the automatic dual-clutch transmission.

My own experience of riding the Africa Twin, during the development of one of its variant on my official assignment in Europe, was exhilarating. The Honda Africa Twin is the first one-litre engine capacity motorcycle to be made in India. Technically, it's only assembled here, after being brought in as completely knocked down (CKD) units. In India, the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin is priced at Rs. 13.06 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), and is available in only one shade - Victory Red. It's also offered in only the DCT variant and the manual is not available on sale in India.

The Honda Africa Twin is powered by a 998 cc, parallel-twin engine which makes 87 bhp of power at 7500 rpm, and 91.9 Nm of peak torque in the India-spec bike. The dual clutch transmission allows three modes - D, S and a full manual with upshift and downshift buttons on the switchgear. There's no clutch lever, or gearshifter. An accessory gear shift lever is available though.

In terms of electronics, there is a three-level switchable traction control, called the Honda Selectable Torque System (HSTC), switchable ABS and a G-button offering half-clutch operation with a 'hill-hold' control. There's adjustable suspension with best-in-class suspension travel and high ground clearance of 250 mm. The Africa Twin doesn't feature ride-by-wire, choice of riding modes, or cornering ABS, but the basic electronics are more than enough to meet most requirements for adventure riding, and offers a very capable off-road bike.
