Observe your headlights for a few seconds and see if both are working. Nine out of ten times, if only one headlight is out, then you can replace the bulb, and you're good to go.
Sometimes if one of your headlights goes out, then you can simply bump it with your fist, and it might turn it on. In such a situation, the filament has burnt out. You shake the filament upon hitting the headlight, and it lights up.
However, this is only a quick fix and not a proper remedy. Mostly you need to replace your light to make it perfect again.

The extremities in temperature can cause your headlights to burn out. Extreme heat or cold can cause an impact on the delicate filament and force it to go out.
The bulb housing cannot handle moisture, and any cracks can result in the halogen bulbs burning out. Even if you replace the bulb, it will blow out in a day or two due to the moisture and humidity. Additionally, you cannot touch the bulbs with your fingers, and if you ever need to install them yourself, then you should wear rubber gloves. The reason behind this is that the salt in your sweat will cause the bulb to go out.
The most common reason behind headlights going out is time. With old age, the lights wear out, and this causes them to stop working. You shouldn't panic as it's a normal part of a car's life and replace it yourself or go to a mechanic.
The new halogen bulb can get dim, and the reason behind this is the plastic housing getting oxidized. This makes it appear yellowish or white. The beam diminishes, and you will need to replace the whole headlight assembly in such a scenario.

The holder which houses the headlight is under the hood. Needless to say, you'll find it on the front of your car.
Three wires are usually attached to the lightbulb's base. Apply force to the cap or clip which holds it in place.
In some cars, you don't require this step, but sometimes the air filter or battery obstructs the bulb, and you need to go behind the inner fender. Gently remove the halogen bulb and ensure that you don't break the clips holding it.
The final step is to insert the new bulb without touching the glass. Upon heating, dirt and oil from your hands can cause the bulb to burst.
