BMW took the wraps off its new i Vision Amby, a pedal-driven electric bicycle, an urban mobility machine and a first of its kind model from the company. BMW says that 'Amby' stands for 'adaptive mobility' and the model interprets the basic idea of adaptive urban mobility on two wheels in a different manner. The i Vision Amby weighs just 30 kg and is the frame is made from Aluminium, getting a modern geometric design. Located right before the handlebars is the smartphone integration pad, which holds the device safely in place using magnets and ensures it is highly visible.

The electric bicycle has a centrally mounted battery with a capacity of 2,00 Wh. There are three riding modes on offer - the first mode offers a top speed of 25 kmph and range of 300+ kilometres. The second mode offers a top speed of 45 kmph and range of up to 180 kilometres. The third mode is the high-speed mode and it offers a top speed of 60 kmph along with a range of 75 kilometres. With a fast-charger, the battery can be fully charged in three hours.

There is a single-sided swinging arm which links the rear wheel with the frame. The front and rear suspension has a travel of 120 mm and the model gets 27.5-inch wheels are fitted with larger and wider tyres than normal in order to offer comfort and safety even at high speeds. Riders have to constantly pedal in order to benefit from the assistance of the electric drive system, although the BMW Motorrad Vision Amby accelerates via a throttle grip/throttle lever and has motorcycle-style footrests instead of pedals.

There is a smartphone app for the BMW i Vision Amby as well, which can be used to toggle between the riding modes, enable geo-fencing and adjust top speed accordingly. The app also works as a digital key, an immobiliser, shows range and charge data and gets over-the-air updates like a regular app. In terms of features, the i Vision Amby gets slim LED light strip on the handlebar, an LED taillight and a small e-ink display along with ABS, high-beam assistant, brake-light assistant and a proximity radar, which gives out acoustic warnings for traffic coming in from the front or rear.
The rear wheel with central fastening can be released and removed easily for optimum ease of transportation. The wheel in the front suspension fork can likewise be removed in the classical way with a screw. The result is a compact construction, and the battery can also be removed and stored separately, which reduces load weight.
