IIT Madras-Incubated start-up Pi Beam has launched the PiMo electric bicycle that can be charged faster than a smartphone, the company claims. The new e-bike is priced at Rs. 30,000. PiMo is a utility e-bike that offers a range of 50 km on a single charge and does not require a licence or registration. About 90 per cent of the components are made in India, and this includes the batteries and controllers. Pi Beam says it aims to sell about 10,000 examples of the PiMo in the next financial year 2021-2022.

Speaking about Pi Beam, Visakh Sasikumar, CEO, Pi Beam Electric, said, "Pi Beam Electric aims to provide end-to-end micro-mobility solutions for logistics and transportation. Small and efficient EVs designed around utility and which are affordable are going to reimagine the way people think about EVs. We have sold over hundreds of Electric Trikes in the market, for purposes ranging from waste management to e-commerce deliveries."
The PiMo does not require a licence or registration and can be used by people of all ages
The PiMo electric bicycle comes with a top speed of 25 kmph. The model comes with a swappable battery, which can be exchanged for a fully charged battery at designated locations. PiMo has been designed for users of all age groups and is being positioned as an upgrade from conventional pedal bicycles. The basic structure of the vehicle also makes it cost-effective and easy-to-use for short-distance commuting.
The PiMo also comes with a large and comfortable seat, while it also gets a swing arm mechanism and dual shock absorbers. Pi Beam also has three other products including the E-Trike, E-Kart and E-Auto on sale.
