The cause of electric vehicles and green mobility has become the centre of discussions across the world as the struggle with pollution and global warming continues. While other countries have been quick to embrace the wave of green vehicles, India is only getting started. The FAME-India scheme, which covers mild hybrid, strong hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric technologies, is a concrete step in that direction.
To be implemented over a period of six years, till 2020, the scheme will have four primary areas of focus, namely, technology development, demand creation, pilot projects, and charging infrastructure. Phase 1 of the scheme, which commenced in April 2015, is currently restricted to 'smart cities', Delhi NCR, Greater Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, all state capitals and other urban cities with a population of over 1 million, and cities of the North Eastern states. The government is striving to create a market for electric vehicles by the means of incentives for all vehicle segments including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and buses.
