The Government of Maharashtra has announced signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Causis E-Mobility, for setting up a zero-emission EV manufacturing facility in the state. Causis E-Mobility Pvt Ltd, a joint venture (JV) company of UK-based Causis Group, will be investing Rs. 2,823 crore to build the new plant, which will come up in Talegaon. The plant will produce electric three-wheelers for last-mile delivery and passenger transport, and it is expected to generate about 1250 jobs in the state. This is the first big-ticket investment under the recently announced Maharashtra EV Policy 2021.

Commenting on the development, Aaditya Thackeray, Minister for Environment, Tourism and Protocol, Government of Maharashtra said, "Taking our commitment to make Maharashtra the lead state in Electric Mobility in India, GoM & MIDC have signed an MoU with Causis E-Mobility to set up an EV production unit in Talegaon. The investment of Rs. 2,800 crore will generate 1,250 employment opportunities and will help in climate action," The MoU signed for Phase 1 will involve the construction of the new EV plant in Talegaon. However, for Phase 2, Causis E-Mobility will set up its own battery Gigafactory in Maharashtra to manufacture and supply EV batteries.

The Government of Maharashtra had released a comprehensive Electrical Vehicle Policy in July 2021, to stimulate the manufacturing of Battery Electric Vehicles in the State. The policy provides elaborate incentives that are spread across three broad categories - supply side, demand side and special incentives for EV Charging Infrastructure. To that effect, the State Government has also drawn up a roadmap to bring in a transition in the transportation ecosystem of Maharashtra that is aimed at attracting investments.

This involves facilitating the establishment of manufacturing units and encouraging the production of electric vehicles, electric vehicle components including Advance Chemistry Cell (ACC) batteries and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). The Government says that Maharashtra's second capital Nagpur is the first city in India to pilot electric mass mobility with a fleet of 200 electric vehicles.
