Mahindra has revealed its first electric SUV, the new Mahindra XUV400 in India. Based on the XUV300 that is already on sale in India, the XUV400 gets styling elements similar with the smaller SUV inside and out while getting many EV-specific design touches. In terms of size, the EV sits in the compact SUV space with its length stretched to 4,200 mm while the 2,600 mm wheelbase from the XUV300 stays unchanged. Mahindra has said that the new electric SUV will be launched in India in January 2023.

In terms of design, the front fascia is similar to the XUV300 though the grille between the headlamps and air vents on the bumper have been closed off. The grille features the new twin-peaks Mahindra logo finished in copper - Mahindra's first SUV to get the new EV logo. Further copper accents decorate the housings for the foglamps. Down the sides, the charging flap sits on the front left fender. The lower doors feature more copper trimming while the roof itself has been finished in the same shade.

Inside, the cabin layout has changed little from the XUV300 with basic dashboard design and layout carried forward unchanged. The changes come in the smaller details such as copper trimming, black leather upholstery, a redesigned gear lever and revised dials in the instrument cluster. Even in terms of features it carries over much from the XUV300 such as an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, auto climate control, auto headlights, rain sensing wipers, power foldable wing mirrors and drive modes among others. That said, it also offers few more features like more than 60 connected car features, over-the-air (OTA) updates and EV specific software for the infotainment system.

Coming to the powerplant, the XUV400 is powered by a 148 bhp electric motor paired with a 39.5kWh battery pack. The electric motor has a peak torque output of 310 Nm and is capable of propelling the SUV up to 100 kmph in 8.3 seconds. Mahindra claims that the XUV400 will have a range of up to 456 km per charge and comes equipped with a single pedal drive feature.
