Maruti Suzuki to Bring Range of Hybrid Cars to India?
The company has already showcased the Swift Range Extender and we have spoken at length about the product. But the new one on the horizon is the Wagon R Hybrid.
The term 'Kitna deti hai' is a popular one in India and Maruti Suzuki has been the one to express this out loud. We Indians have always wanted our cars to be cheap, easy to maintain and offer great mileage. Well Maruti Suzuki has always heard to our demands and that is one reason why it's the market leader.
However, a lot has changed and with the times and the company has had to change as well. Maruti Suzuki has been at the forefront of innovation and their success they enjoy is not only because of their products but also because of when they launch it. They were the first to bring out the AMT in a small car and now they'll be the first to bring in a small capacity diesel powertrain to the market too with the Celerio diesel.
But from what we read and hear, the trend is changing and we can see Maruti Suzuki take the relevant step in that direction. Hybrid cars are the future and the company is already paving its own path. Infact, even the Government of India, to promote eco-friendly vehicles, have launched the FAME India scheme in which they offer incentives on electric and hybrid vehicles of up to Rs 29000 for bikes and Rs 1.38 lakh for cars.
FAME India - Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India - is part of the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan. The benefits of scheme have already been passed on to the customers and we've seen Toyota do it with the new Camry Hybrid, where they cut the price of the car by Rs. 70000.
Maruti Suzuki is looking at doing something similar and thanks to the FAME scheme, they will be able to bring out hybrid cars at affordable prices. In four-wheelers, the incentives range from Rs 13000 to Rs 1.38 lakh and part or the full benefit will be passed onto the customers.
Making waves in this direction the company has already showcased the Swift Range Extender and we have spoken at length about the product. But the new one on the horizon is the Wagon R Hybrid. Currently sold in Japan, the Wagon R Hybrid has been brought to India by Maruti Suzuki for research and development and this might be a great opportunity for the company to dive into this pool.
There is already a sub-4 metre Wagon R MPV in the making and that will be launched soon, but the Hybrid variant would add to the lineup of green cars (CNG) that the company already has in its portfolio.
