Mercedes-Benz India has announced partnering with the Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP) to set up an oxygen plant at the Seth Tarachand Hospital, in Pune, Maharashtra. The new oxygen plant will come with a capacity of 280 litres/minute and is expected to support at least 200 beds at the hospital. The facility can also support the future expansion of the hospital and provide surplus oxygen to other hospitals through cylinders. Mercedes-Benz India is funding 50 per cent cost of the plant while the rest of the funding is raised by Bharat Vikas Parishad.
Mercedes-Benz India says that the new facility will help bolster oxygen stocks at a time when India is still reporting over 30,000 COVID-19 cases in a day and while a third wave predicted to hit the nation soon. The plant was officially handed over to the hospital in a ceremony in the presence of the Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Mercedes-Benz India's Managing Director and CEO Martin Schwenk.

Commenting on the initiative, Mercedes-Benz India Boss, Martin Schwenk said, "It remains our endeavour to support the local community and authorities wherever possible and stand together with them during challenging times. The oxygen plant that we are jointly setting up in Pune will not only support the current requirements of Seth Tarachand Hospital but also help them for any future expansion. This is a long-term project, which will support the local community even after the pandemic."

Earlier, in April 2020, Mercedes-Benz India had set up a temporary hospital with medical facilities and isolation wards for COVID-19 patients
This is not the first time that the company has made such an initiative. Earlier, in April 2020, when the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic had hit India, Mercedes-Benz India had set up a temporary hospital with medical facilities and isolation wards for COVID-19 patients in Mhalunge-Ingale village, Chakan Khed, near its manufacturing plant. Back then the company has also directly supported the Grant Medical Foundation (Ruby Hall Clinic) by donating ventilators.
