One of the most contributing factors to this spike in sales in luxury cars is their relatively more affordability than before due to their local assembly in India. It has helped luxury carmakers to save a lot of import taxes imposed on completely-built units (CBU) imported into India.
Luxury Brands Following the Make-in-India Initiative:
The luxury brands, which are making some of their models here in India through the completely knocked-down (CKD) route, are Mercedes Benz (at Pune), BMW (at Chennai), Audi (at Aurangabad), Jaguar Land Rover (at Pune), Volvo (at Bengaluru) and Mini (at Chennai).

- Mercedes-Benz S-Class –
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class has entered the seventh generation and now ranks as the most expensive model assembled locally. The S-Class is available here in two made-in-India variants – S 350d (Rs 1.60 crore) and S 450 4MATIC (Rs 1.69 crore).
- Mercedes-Benz GLS –
The SUV equivalent of the S-Class, the Mercedes-Benz GLS, is also assembled in India, making it the most expensive made-in-India Mercedes-Benz SUV. Only a single variant of the GLS is made and sold in India, the GLS 400d 4MATIC, which is sold in a full-spec seven-seater version and is priced at Rs 1.16 crore.
- BMW 7-Series –
The flagship saloon from BMW, the 7-Series, is the most expensive car from BMW to be made in India. The 7-Series is available in three variants – 740 Li M Sport Individual (Rs 1.50 crore), 730 Ld DPE Signature (Rs 1.42 crore) and 745 Le xDrive (Rs 1.76 crore). Out of these three variants, the 740 Li M Sport Individual and 730 Ld DPE Signature are assembled in India, while the 745 Le xDrive comes here through CBU.
- BMW X7 –
Like the flagship saloon from BMW, even its flagship SUV, the X7 is sold in India as a locally assembled model. Out of the three variants of BMW X7 on sale in India – X7 xDrive40i M Sport (Rs 1.19 crore), X7 xDrive30d DPE Signature (Rs 1.18 crore) and X7 M50d (Rs 1.79 crore), the first two variants are made in India. It makes it the most expensive locally-assembled SUV in India, as a whole.
- Volvo XC90 –
The most opulent vehicle from Volvo in India, the XC90 flagship SUV, is also assembled in India locally. There are two variants of Volvo XC90 on sale in India – B6 Inscription (Rs 93.90 lakh) and Recharge full-hybrid (Rs 96.65 lakh), out of which the B6 Inscription is assembled in India.
