The initial response to Tata's latest effort, the Tiago, has been encouraging to say the least. The small hatch has already got over 22,000 bookings in the two months that it has been on sale. Not the one to rest on the good work done, Tata is now working on a variety of new cars, which will be launched one by one till 2020.
With the launch of the Tiago and a preview of the Nexon and the Hexa, Tata has entered into a new phase with regards to its overall design and engineering, making use of good quality materials and above all, making cars with a feel good factor, which wasn't exactly Tata's forte earlier. But now, things are changing, for the good The company has called upon all of its design studios and even its marquee company of Jaguar Land Rover to help out with these new cars.
The prime focus though is on a hatchback, which has been codenamed X451 and from what we hear, will be going up against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Balenos and the Hyundai Elite i20s. So it goes without saying that it going to be another make-or-break car for Tata. Everything about the X451 will be fresh and new. The design language of the X451 might be taking cues from the Nexon Concept, which will be Tata's upcoming sub-compact crossover, also showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. The front end might be aggressively styled so as to command presence on the road. The interiors too will be given a premium touch and will be loaded with features so as to take on its competitors.
The basis of the X451 will be Tata's new Advanced Modular Platform or AMP. In fact, the Tiago, the Kite sedan and the Nexon are all built on an earlier version of the AMP. Also, as the name suggests, the AMP will be responsible for spawning even more cars, possibly the sedan version of the X451 hatchback, which can take on the Honda City and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz for example. Apart from these, Tata is also working on a model that will be the replacement for the Sumo and the Movus.
Looks like Tata has put its game face on and has set the ball rolling with a slew of new cars to be launched from 2017 to 2020.
