After the new generation XC90 and the all-new S90, Swedish carmaker Volvo is now working on readying its mid-sized crossover-SUV the XC60. Volvo has been testing the car in different weather conditions, and the last time we brought you the spy shots of the car in June. And now as the winter is here, what better place than the company's homeland Sweden for cold-weather testing.
The recently releases spy images show that the car is still covered in heavy camouflage but the exposed bits suggests that the new-gen Volvo XC60 could look like a downscaled version of the new Volvo XC90. This is because the car is based on the company's SPA platform which not only underpins the XC90 SUV and the S90 sedan, both of which we have already reviewed, and V90 Cross Country as well that is also set to be launched in India next year.

The similarities are not just limited to structure and shape. In terms of design, the new Volvo XC60 appears to get the same vertical slat grille, sleek headlamps with the carmaker's signature Thor's Hammer LED daytime running lights. From the sides, the new XC90 looks more SUV-like thanks to the new platform and comes with new black alloy wheels and black-walled tyres. The rear section seems to have retained some design bits of the outgoing XC60 like the vertical tail lamps and curved tailgate.

The new platform has also made the new XC60 a bit bigger than the outgoing model, which translates into more room for passengers as well as increased trunk capacity. That said, despite the increased size, there will be a sizeable reduction in weight as well courtesy of the same SPA platform, improving efficiency and performance.

Under the hood, the story more or less remains the same and the next-gen Volvo XC60 will be powered by a range of turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The powertrain list will also include a 254bhp 2.0-liter petrol engine. A plug-in hybrid derivative is also on the card that is expected to receive a 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder petrol engine paired to an electric motor to produce a combined output of approximately 250bhp.
The car will be introduced next year and is likely to come to India in late 2017 or early 2018
