The AMG One Project at Mercedes has been a collaboration between the team at AMG and high-performance powertrains in Brixworth which has been behind the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid engine which powered the Mercedes F1 team to 8 consecutive world championships. Now, this car is chomping to fruition with inputs from Lewis Hamilton himself. The car has entered the production phase for the 275-unit limited run and the assembly will be done by hand.
The interesting thing about this car is that it uses the very same F1 engine that the Mercedes F1 team has used in its world championship-winning cars. The biggest challenge has been adapting that engine for a road-legal car considering the emissions requirements. That being said, the internal combustion part of the power unit has been described as the most efficient one on the planet with a thermal efficiency of over 50 per cent.
Mercedes AMG has set up a facility with Multimatic to have a bespoke production facility. There are 16 assembly and testing stations and the process is similar to the manufacturing of a luxury watch as per Mercedes. More than 50 people are involved with the manufacturing of the AMG One hypercar.
It has 1,049 bhp and can rev up to 11,000 rpm while meeting Euro 6 emissions regulations. The internal combustion engine alone produces 566 bhp and idles at 1,200 rpm. It even gets an 8.4 kWh lithium-ion battery which enables it to run in pure EV mode for 18 km. It has a 0-100 km/h time of 2.9 seconds which is admittedly slower than electric cars like the Tesla Model S Plaid, Rimac Nevera and Lucid Air. It can do 200 km/h in 7 seconds and has a top speed of 353 km/h.
