Rolls-Royce Spectre EV Completes Winter Test Phase Near The Arctic Circle
Key Highlights
  • The Rolls-Royce Spectre is the automaker's first-ever electric car
  • Rolls-Royce completed the winter testing of the Spectre in -40 degrees C
  • The Spectre Super Coupe will debut in the fourth quarter of 2023

The Rolls-Royce Spectre will be the British marque's first-ever electric vehicle and the company has announced that the upcoming offering has completed its winter test near the arctic circle. The first prototypes of the Spectre EV are currently being tested in temperatures under -26 degrees centigrade and further cooled to -40 degrees. Rolls-Royce says the engineers perform very basic tests in extreme conditions on the prototypes to ensure that each system is operational and functions at a basic level in a cold-weather environment.

Rolls-Royce has completed about 25 per cent or half a million kilometres of testing on the Spectre EV from the total goal of 2.5 million km

This test is combined with the beginnings of the refinement process that form the foundations of a motor car worthy of the Rolls-Royce badge. This includes NVH tests, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and cooling systems. The company also revealed that the Spectre EV has completed more than half a million kilometres of testing, 25 per cent of the total goal. The new Rolls-Royce Spectre EV will make its global debut in 2023 and it will make its way to India in the future.

Speaking about the winter test program, Torsten Muller-Otvos, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said, "The announcement of every new Rolls-Royce motor car carries a great weight of expectation, but Spectre is unquestionably the most anticipated product in the marque's modern history. This is because it is much more than a product. It is a symbol of our bright, bold electric future, and it represents a seismic shift in our powertrain technology. It is for this reason that we have created a testing programme that is as significant and historical as Spectre itself. The extraordinary undertaking of educating Spectre to think and behave like a Rolls-Royce will cover 2.5 million kilometres, which is a simulation of more than 400 years of use for a Rolls-Royce. Today, I can confirm that 25 per cent of this journey is now complete, and the results have met our most ambitious expectations."

Rolls-Royce engineers conduct some very basic tests in extreme weather conditions to check all functions of the car

Rolls-Royce also conducts, what it calls, "de-escalated time", which is an additional component of winter testing. This period enables the automaker more accuracy and control in creating the Rolls-Royce experience using Spectre's chassis control systems, powertrain management and electronics control. By driving on snow and ice, the engineers can create dynamic circumstances at low speeds that would ordinarily occur at high speeds. This, in turn, help improve the vehicle's performance in areas such as handling, controllability, stability, predictability and waftability.

The upcoming Spectre EV also marks a new era for the automaker, which it calls Rolls-Royce 3.0, and represents the brand's electric future. The Spectre will also be RR's most connected car ever with 141,200 sender-receiver relations and more than 1,000 functions with over 25,000 sub-functions. By comparison, Phantom has 51,000 sender-receiver relations, 456 functions and 647 sub-functions.

Rolls-Royce says the Spectre has been designed as an electric super coupe, while design elements like the iconic split headlamps have been carried over. It will also come equipped with 23-inch wheels. The new Spectre EV is being described as a Super Coupe and will make its global debut in the fourth quarter of 2023. It will come to India in the near-future.
