Speed Limit On National Highways Could Be Increased To 140 kmph: Nitin Gadkari
Key Highlights
  • The bill will soon be presented in Parliament to increase the speed limit
  • Speed on National Highways could go up to 140 kmph.
  • Speed on city roads could go up to 75 kmph.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) may soon increase the speed limit on national highways to 140 kmph. MoRTH Minister - Nitin Gadkari said that the speed limit on national highways may soon see an upward revision and the bill will soon be presented in Parliament to increase the speed limit on Indian roads. However, the Supreme Court and High Court need to be convinced first before making the revision. Recently, The Madras High Court struck down a notification of the central government, fixing 120 kmph as the speed limit for vehicles running on highways. The bench observed that though there was a better engine technology and improved road infrastructure, there was no improvement in compliance of the road safety rules by the motorists.

MoRTH Minister - Nitin Gadkari said that the speed limit on national highways may soon see an upward revision.

"The parameter of speed limit of vehicles in India is one of the big challenges for us. There are some decisions by the Supreme Court and High Court regarding car speed, due to which we are not able to do anything. Today, such an expressway has been built in the country and not even a dog can come on those roads because barricading has been done on both sides of the road. In such a situation, we have made a plan that I will go to Parliament and change all the parameters by making a bill," Gadkari said at India Today Conclave 2021.

The speed limit on expressways and highways should be increased from 120 kmph to 140 kmph.

Elaborating on the revision, the Union Minister also said that the speed limit on expressways and highways should be increased from 120 kmph to 140 kmph. Similarly, the speed limit on national highways should be restricted to 100 kmph on 4-lane roads, 80kmph on 2-lane roads, and 75kmph on city roads. Gadkari said the move would also help facilitate autonomous driving on Indian roads, and allow car companies to manufacture such vehicles.
