Alibaug is said to be the most interesting and well-known sea beach near Mumbai. The place is said to be very interesting because of its rich history. The history of Alibaug says that about 2,200 years ago, Bene Israeli Jews settled in the area where their ship landed. It is also known that they settled there and adapted themselves to their surroundings. They learnt the language, culture but the only thing they didn't change was their religion. Alibaug, the name means Ali garden which is also named after a Jew who was a very rich merchant and his name was Ali, he had plantations and orchards. Alibaug is said to be ruled by the Portuguese till the 16th Century but in the 17th Century, the Marathas took over. The Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took over the place in the 17th Century and developed a fort named Kolaba fort. Kolaba fort is said to be used to launch raids on British merchant ships in the 18th Century by the Maratha navy commander named Kanhoji Angre.
According to the locals, the easiest and fastest way to reach Alibaug is by boat to Mandwa Jetty. Alibaug takes around 20 minutes to reach by speedboat. They operate from 6 am to 6 pm. But if you are trying to reach Alibaug by road then you have to take the Mumbai-Goa highway. It is even known nowadays that you can take your car on a ferry in 60 minutes. Alibaug is about 95 km away if you are trying to reach the place by car. 3 hours is what you need to cover the 95 km to reach your destination.
Alibaug is said to be good to visit around any time of the year but you should try and avoid visiting Alibaug during monsoons. Monsoons are said to be dangerous during monsoons because as it is a sea beach, you cannot predict how strong the tides can get. Alibaug can be enjoyed very well from November to February.
