The Tata Altroz is one of the more popular products from Tata Motors, successfully making a name for itself in the premium hatchback space, backed by a slew of engine options, attractive looks, premium interior, and a 5-star safety rating from the Global NCAP. However, the only gripe we have here is that the hatchback is offered with a manual gearbox, with the missing link here being the automatic gearbox, which the company says will be introduced in the coming weeks. This was confirmed to carandbike.com by Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, during an interaction at the launch of the iCNG range.

Speaking to carandbike, Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., said, “From a product perspective, there are certain options that are missing from our portfolio. The Altroz hatchback doesn't have an automatic transmission, so we have to fill this open gap.”

Chandran, however, did not reveal a timeframe for the launch of the Altroz with the automatic gearbox but confirmed it is part of the 10 products that the company is planning to introduce this year. The delay in introducing new products for India could be blamed on the rising shortage of semi-conductor components, which has affected India as well as the global automobile markets. Although unconfirmed, the upcoming Tata Altroz automatic is expected to use a 7-speed DCT unit and will compete against Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI and Hyundai i20 Turbo.
