Tata Punch Micro SUV: What We Know So Far
Key Highlights
  • Tata Motors will announce prices for the Punch micro SUV next week
  • It will be the smallest and most affordable SUV from Tata Motors
  • The Punch micro SUV is the first SUV to be built on the ALFA platform

The Tata Punch was unveiled in India last week, and Tata Motors commenced bookings for the car on the same day with a token amount of Rs. 21,000. The mini SUV was expected to go on sale on October 20, however, the Indian automaker advanced the launch by a couple of days. Prices for the Punch now will be announced on October 18, 2021. We have already driven the car, and you can read our review here. Here's everything we know so far about the soon-to-be-launched Punch micro SUV.

The Tata Punch is the third model from the home-grown carmaker to receive a 5-star safety rating for adult protection from the Global NCAP. It scored 16.45 out of 17 points for adult safety and 40.89 out of 49 points for child occupant safety. In fact, it is the only second car from India to get a 4-star score for child occupant protection.

It is the first SUV from Tata Motors to be underpinned by the ALFA-ARC (Agile Light Flexible Advanced Architecture) platform and developed on the Impact 2.0 design language. The carmaker will offer the Punch in four variants- Pure, Adventure, Accomplished and Creative. Do note, these variants are being referred 'Personas' by the automaker.

The Tata Punch will be offered in four variants- Pure, Adventure, Accomplished and Creative.

The production version has not deviated much from the Tata HBX concept that was unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo. The exterior design is in line with its elder siblings, the Harrier and the Safari, with an aggressive front end sporting a signature split lighting design. The aesthetics are underlined by a tri-arrow pattern, flanked by the LED DRLs, while the projector headlamps are positioned below on the bumper. It also gets wraparound LED taillights with tri-arrow patterns, high-set rear bumper, roof-mounted stop lamp, black cladding, raked windscreen, neatly sculpted tailgate with company branding and more.

Dimension-wise, the Tata Punch measures 3827 mm in length, 1742 mm in width and 1615 mm in height, while the wheelbase is 2445 mm. It has a ground clearance of 187 mm. It will be offered in six colour options - Orcus White, Tornado Blue, Calypso Red, Meteor Bronze, Atomic Orange, Tropical Mist, and Daytona Grey. Do note, dual-tone colour options are reserved only for the top-spec models.

The Tata Punch micro SUV gets a clean and minimalist dashboard in a dual-tone paint scheme

On the inside, the Punch gets a neatly designed dual-tone paint dashboard that gives a modern and stylish appeal to the overall cabin. The micro SUV comes with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. There's also an optional Tata's iRA connectivity suite on offer for the top-end Creative variant. The instrument cluster looks very similar to the one seen on the Altroz premium hatchback. It also gets 90-degree opening doors for a hassle-free entry and exit, which again is a carryover.

The Punch also gets a premium upholstery with a tri-arrow design, leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, leather gear knob, push start-stop button, automatic climate control, rear armrest cruise control, auto climate control, cooled glovebox, 4-speakers, auto-sensing wipers and auto headlights, a 7-inch instrument panel, auto fold ORVMs and more. In terms of safety, the micro SUV is loaded with dual-airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, ABS with EBD and an industry-first brake sway control. The top-spec models also get a reverse-parking camera.

The new Tata Punch is powered by the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine

The Tata Punch is powered by the company's tried and tested 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine with Dyna-Pro technology, which is tuned to make 84 bhp at 6000 rpm and 113 Nm at 3300 rpm. The same engine also does duty on the Altroz and the Tiago. The mill comes paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox along with an optional AMT unit.
