Tata Tiago, the home-grown carmaker's most anticipated hatchback for 2016 is all set to be launched in India today. Based on the carmaker's popular XO platform the, Tata Tiago shares its underpinnings with the Indica but thanks to company's new design language, the car looks smart, stylish and fresh. Equipped with some of the best-in-class features, the Tiago is expected to be the carmaker's ace in the hole in the compact hatchback segment. Tiago's biggest rival in India will be Maruti Celerio.
The Tata Tiago is the automaker's first launch for the 2016-17 financial year and is an ambitious product for the company targeting the mass market segments. Based on the XO platform, Tiago gets an extensively reworked chassis coming from the Indica, but bears little resemblance to the older model. Instead, Tiago has been designed with inputs coming from the Indian automaker's design centres in Coventry, UK; Turin, Italy and Pune, India.
Talking about the design, the Tata Tiago gets a new signature honeycomb-grille with a chrome 'Humanity Line' that runs into the smoked head-lamps, a new set of alloy wheels, and a completely new rear profile. The stance is more proportioned and is intended to appeal towards young buyers. The cabin is refreshingly new and gets a dual-tone finish, completed with gloss black inserts. The three-spoke steering wheel design looks good and comes with audio and phone controls, while the centre console houses the infotainment system and HVAC unit.
The Tiago is loaded with some very interesting features and also gets a segment first Juke car app, in addition to turn-by-turn navigation. Both features need smartphone connectivity though. Under the hood, the Tiago features two new petrol and diesel engine options. Both units are paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Tata has also provided Power and Eco modes on both versions, in a bid to extract improved fuel efficiency from the three-cylinder units.
