It was in September 2017, that UM Motorcycles had first spoken about bringing sub 500 cc adventure motorcycles to India. And guess what, an eagle eyed enthusiast has finally spotted not one but two UM adventure motorcycles somewhere in India. The bikes in question are the DSR II and the Hypersport. The bike with alloy wheels is the Hypersport while the one with spoked wheels is the DSR II. Going by the looks and the wheels, the Hypersport seems to be a supermoto, while the DSR II looks like a proper off-road biased motorcycle. It might be possible that the bikes were brought to India to get an initial feedback from dealers and prospective customers via focus group interviews.

Both motorcycles get three engine options globally, but we believe UM will offer these bikes in India with the 223 cc option. Both motorcycles have disc brakes at the front and at the rear as well, but there is no confirmation whether the bikes have ABS or not. While UM has not confirmed on the launch timeline, we believe that DSR II could be launched sometime this year. We are not sure whether the Hypersport will be launched in India or not.
The affordable adventure bike segment in India is still in a nascent stage and currently, the only such bike is the Royal Enfield Himalayan. The other upcoming motorcycle in this segment is the Hero XPulse. But, there is no confirmed launch timeline for that either. Nonetheless, if and when these UM adventure bikes are launched, they will be competing with the Himalayan and the XPulse.
BMW is also getting ready to launch the G 310 GS and KTM has already announced that the 390 Adventure is coming to India next year. So by this time next year, people looking to buy an affordable adventure bike will be spoilt for choice, literally.
