The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced further extending the validity of motor vehicle documents till September 30, 2020. This means all documents like fitness certificates, permit (all types), driving license, registration certificates that have expired on or any time after February 1, 2020, will remain valid until September 30. This is to facilitate people who are not able to renew their documents due to the lockdown issued in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Previously the deadline was until July 31, 2020.

Vehicle documents that would have expired after February 1, are now valid till September 30
Previously, the ministry issued an advisory on March 30 announcing an extension of document renewals till May 31. Later, it was extended till June 30 and towards the end of May, the ministry again extended the deadline till July 31, following the extension of the lockdown. However, considering the fact that many measures for prevention of COVID-19 are still in place, the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari has directed his Ministry to issue advice for extension of this period till the end of September.
The ministry has also issues a gazette notification to ease the fee on renewals and /or additional fee
Furthermore, the ministry has also issued a gazette notification on May 21, 2020, relaxing the fee on renewals and /or additional fee under Rule 32 or Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, till July 31, 2020. The Ministry has also requested the State/UT Governments to consider offering relaxation in requirement of a permit, or fees or taxes for renewal/penalty for permits and more to provide relief during these extraordinary circumstances of COVID-19.
Currently, under its Unlock 1.0 programme the Indian government has announced several relaxations like - restarting public transport, allowing inter-city travel, private vehicles on the road. Many business have also got permission to resume operations.
