Volkswagen has officially discontinued the Jetta and the iconic Beetle model in India due to independent reasons. While the stocks for the Beetle are over, the Jetta was low on demand since the past year. The company finally took the decision to take both these models off its product line-up for India and also its official website. Both the model were launched in 2015, the Jetta was priced at Rs. 13.87 lakh while the Beetle retailed at Rs. 28.73 lakh.

The Jetta takes on the likes of the Hyundai Elantra, Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla. While the Elantra received a facelift in 2016, the Octavia got it last year and so did the Corolla. Compared to these models, the last generation Jetta was launched in 2013, while it only received a facelift in 2015. The outgoing model was built on the old PQ35 platform which is axed from the global market. The new generation Jetta, built on the new MQB platform, was showcased at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year, but there is no news on whether it will make to the Indian shores. However, with the new generation Jetta making it to the global markets soon, it is possible that the company could revive the model soon.

The Beetle too, was based on the PQ35 platform, and the design was based on the original Beetle. However, this did not result in strong sales for the iconic Beetle. While the production was halted for some time now, the company finally decided to pull the plug off the Beetle along with the Jetta. However, internationally, VW is mulling to introduce an electric version of the Beetle and will be introduced later this year or early next year. Will the electric Beetle make it to India? Not likely.
