The world's largest automaker, Volkswagen, has sold its 150 millionth car and it comes as no surprise that it is Golf. The Golf is the most popular hatchback in most parts of Europe (and globally too) and is responsible for a huge chunk of Volkswagen Group sales. Although the likes of the standard petrol, diesel or the hotter GTI versions are more popular, the 150 millionth Volkswagen is actually a hybrid in the form of the Golf GTE. The GTE is the plug in hybrid version of the popular hatchback and sits alongside the all-electric eGolf hatchback.

The 150 millionth Volkswagen was sold in Norway and will be delivered to its new owner Turid Sedahl Knutsen in the town of Lier, not too far from Oslo. Norway is the world leader when it comes to electric mobility with over 20 per cent of all cars sold in Norway having some sort of electrification in either a hybrid or an all-electric capacity. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Wolf-Stefan Specht, Head of Sales Europe at the Volkswagen brand, said, "The 150 millionth Volkswagen symbolizes the brand's long tradition. At the same time, the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid offers a glimpse of the future of mobility at Volkswagen. That is why we are delighted the GTE has been delivered to a customer in Norway, the frontrunner for e-mobility in Europe."

The Volkswagen Golf GTE is powered by an electric motor that is mated to a 1.4-litre TSI motor. The electric motor makes 100 bhp while the TSI engine is rated at 148 bhp making a total of 202 bhp of peak power. The Golf GTE plug-in hybrid can also be driven on an all-electric mode for a maximum distance of 50 kms under ideal driving conditions. The Golf GTE is made at Volkswagen's main plant in Wolfsburg.
