A couple of years ago when the idea of the first GigaFactory was floated, Tesla co-founder Elon Musk thought of the factory as a product too. He often called it the " The Machine that builds the machine". Musk always wanted his factories to feel outworldly as if they were an "alien dreadnought" from science fiction with it being littered with robots. It seems like his vision has come to fruition as witnessed by a video his company has released of its new GigaFactory in Shanghai, China.
The idea was first floated soon after the production of Model 3 vehicles at their Fremont factory. Earlier Musk had said that the Model 3 production line will only be a version 0.5 of the alien dreadnought, but he envisioned the line will get updated with more automation, which is what this video showcases. This, however, is just the tip of the ice-berg as he envisions a version 3 in a few more years.
Tesla's factories are highly automated
Musk believes that by the time the factory reaches stage three of its development, there would be literally no human intervention involved. Currently, the Gigafactory Shanghai is making Model 3 on its production lines. The video was released this weekend by Tesla China, which showed the production at the Gigafactory Shanghai via its official Weibo account. This factory isn't fully automated Musk claims, it is getting closer to that vision day by day. In the video you can see in the production line is full of robots working simultaneously on a single car.
The factory in China has more robots than the factory in US
Last quarter, Tesla had an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles at Gigafactory Shanghai. These impressive numbers have ramped up in just over seven months after starting their production. That's literally 4,000 vehicles per week and going by the numbers it only seems they have increased through the third quarter.
