About Yamaha MT-15

The Yamaha MT-15 was an eagerly awaited model in the Indian market and offers street fighter esque practicality while offering the performance that the R15 is known for providing. The underpinnings are similar for both these motorcycles, providing more choices for customers as well. They can now choose between the aggressive R15 which is more focused on the track and also the sporty and attractive MT-15 which is more practical for everyday usage. The MT-15 comes for Rs. 1,44,900-1,47,900 which is a competitive price point in the roadster category. It does manage to create an impression even when paired up against formidable rivals like the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V, KTM 125 Duke and Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 to name a few.

This time around, the Yamaha MT-15 offers a refreshing look while sporting a design with bold touches and cues. It is one of the boldest models from Yamaha till date while adhering to the design language that is visible for larger models like the MT-10 and MT-09. The design is aggressive for the Yamaha MT-15 while the bike has oodles of road presence as well. There are twin slot DRLs (daytime running lights) along with a single LED headlight which is positioned at the center. The transformer-esque facial design makes the bike stand out and this is further accentuated by the chiseled fuel tank with its plastic belly pan and the striking radiator shrouds. The single piece step-up seat is now more chiseled as well, while offering enhanced comfort courtesy of the extended tail portion which accommodates the LED tail light.

The instrument cluster comes from the YZF-R15 V3.0 and also comes with an LCD display setup. The unit also gets a digital speedometer along with a bar-esque tachometer and fuel gauge in tandem with an ABS warning lamp. There is also an odometer along with Trip 1 and Trip 2, gear shift lift indicator, VVA indicator and clock. The Yamaha MT-15 also comes with a single cylinder 155 cc liquid cooled mill which is similar to the one used in the R15 and it gets VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) technology, dishing out a fabulous 19 bhp at 10,000 rpm along with 14.7 Nm of maximum torque at 8,500 RPM. This engine is mated to a 6-speed transmission system while getting an assist and slipper clutch as a standard feature. Top speed stands at 118 Kmph for the Yamaha MT-15. The bike also uses a Deltabox frame by way of underpinnings while coming with telescopic front forks (with 130 mm of travel) and a rear monoshock (with 97 mm travel). There is a single front 282 mm disc along with a rear 220 mm disc. There is also single-channel ABS as a standard feature. The bike also offers 100/80 R17 front tyres and 140/70 R17 tyres.

Yamaha MT-15 Expert Review

Yamaha MT-15

The Yamaha MT-15 is a value proposition for buyers in the segment who seek something sporty, attractive, and refined.

How is the Design?

The Yamaha MT-15 comes with the same body panels in its newest iteration while getting subtle and flashy color choices alike. IT also comes with a new USD fork and the front portion has a more muscular touch to it. The new MT-15 also comes with gold anodized forks in front for better design appeal while it also has colors like Metallic Black, Racing Blue, Cyan Blue, and Ice Fluo-Vermillion. The alloy wheels are also attractive to look at while there is the same nose and face with the single-pod LED projector light and the eyebrow-shaped twin DRLs. Yamaha has considerably enhanced the overall fit and finish along with a better instrument console and switchgear.

How is the Performance?

The Yamaha MT-15 comes with a smooth and refined engine which maintains its performance throughout the entire rev range. However, there is a slight vibration that is apparent through the bars and pegs of the bike when you get closer to the limit. There gearing is shorter, and the engine does well at congested city speeds as well. The fuel economy and efficiency of the engine is also top-notch. The 155 cc liquid cooled and four valve engine makes slightly more torque than before. It now makes 18.4 PS of power and 14.1 Nm of maximum torque. The bike has more kerb weight this time and it is faster to the 60 kmph and 100 kmph marks alike. The gearing is more suitable towards city riding with the engine sounding a little off-key on the highway when you push it to 100 kmph.

The top speed is somewhere around 130 kmph although the 120 kmph mark is what sets off overall performance to be honest.

How does the Yamaha MT-15 Ride?

The Yamaha MT-15 has a USD fork now and this enhances ride quality sizably along with the aluminium swingarm. The wheelbase has also reduced by approximately 10 mm owing to a mounting point change for the fork. The motorcycle thus handles and rides much better than before due to these changes. The suspension is somewhat stiffer although it is not problematic. Yet, the front offers superior feedback while cornering. You can thus get up to higher speeds with the bike offering great stability overall. The bike has better riding manners, and you can feel it when you start pushing the engine. Riding in the city is a breeze and the tighter turning radius and sharper steering angle are major reasons for the same. The brakes have good feedback overall although ABS at the back has been given a miss again.

How comfortable is the Yamaha MT-15?

The Yamaha MT-15 with its rear-set position for the foot pegs ensures an improved riding posture. The upgraded version comes with a lower position due to the handlebar being revamped and reset. The riding position is more unique this time, but city commuting will be comfortable enough. There is a comfortable and broader seat for the rider although the pillion rider will face some limitations here. Comfort is clearly an issue for pillion riders on this bike.

How’s the Tech?

The Yamaha MT-15 comes with features like a reverse LCD instrument console with missed call/incoming call alerts, Bluetooth connectivity, email and SMS notifications, and phone battery levels. The instrument console also gets the Y-Connect smartphone app with email, message, and call alerts. There is also the side-stand engine inhibitor switch on this bike.

How’s the mileage of the Yamaha MT-15?

You can expect average mileage figures of 45-56.87 kmpl for the Yamaha MT-15.

Is the Yamaha MT-15 good value for money?

The Yamaha MT-15 offers better value for money this time around. It still remains a powerful enough motorcycle for varying roads and has a sporty and punchy engine with lower kerb weight and improved handling as well. The price is steeper, but it is still competitive against its rivals.

How is the after sales service?

The first service comes after 1000 km while the second one is after 4000 km. The third one comes after 7000 km and the fourth one comes after 10000 km.

Which motorbikes compete in the segment?

There are several rivals competing in the segment. The Yamaha MT-15 is a costly proposition, but it does come close to the KTM 125 Duke which is marginally more affordable. The Bajaj NS200 is also more affordable although by a slight margin. The Yamaha MT-15 has the most aggressive and radical styling out of these motorcycles, and it has a bigger engine than the KTM. However, the Bajaj NS200 offers the most powerful and largest engine of the lot. The KTM is the sole motorcycle here with upside-down front forks while there are telescopic front forks for the Bajaj and Yamaha models.

Verdict (Is it value for money?)

The overall value proposition is clearly defined. You get better riding comfort, a more refined engine and decent performance. There is aggressive styling and a decent feature list. The engine is refined, and fuel economy figures are excellent for this segment. You also get a fun riding experience overall. Yet, rear ABS is a big miss, and the motorcycle is clearly more focused on riding in the city.

People also ask For

  • How much does a Yamaha MT-15 cost?

The Yamaha MT-15 is priced at Rs. 1,44,900 (ex-showroom) for its entry-level STD variant. At the same time, the top-end Mat Light Grey variant is priced at Rs. 1,47,900 (ex-showroom).

  • Is the Yamaha MT-15   a good bike?

Yes, the Yamaha MT-15 is a good bike for buyers in this segment. The design is sharp and edgy while road presence is excellent to say the least. The riding position is a little more compact and tighter than desired and the switchgear is not as good. However, you do get some decent features along with precise gear shifts, a capable engine that performs well in city conditions and decent fuel economy. There is lack of dual-channel ABS with only single-channel ABS being offered although the overall comfort, ride quality and performance are on expected lines at this price point.

  • Is the Yamaha MT-15  better than the KTM 125 Duke ?

It is a really engaging battle between the Yamaha MT-15 and the KTM 125 Duke in this hotly contested segment. Price-wise, the Yamaha MT-15 is considerably cheaper than the KTM 125 Duke, starting from Rs. 1,44,900 (ex-showroom) while the KTM 125 Duke is priced from Rs. 1.7 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. The Yamaha MT-15 offers better fuel economy of 48 Kmpl while the KTM 125 Duke offers fuel economy of 34.50 Kmpl in comparison. The latter makes 14.30 BHP while the former makes 19 BHP. The former has a 155 cc engine while the KTM 125 Duke gets a 124.7 cc engine. Torque figures also stand at 14.7 Nm for the Yamaha MT-15 while they are 12 Nm for the KTM 125 Duke. Fuel tank capacity is also lower at 10.2 litres for the Duke while standing at 11 litres for the MT-15. Hence, from a value proposition perspective, the Yamaha MT-15 makes for a better option.

  • Which model of Yamaha MT-15 is best?

The Yamaha MT-15 comes in three variants, namely STD, MotoGP Edition, and Mat Light Grey. The price difference is negligible and the only differences are the special color scheme and a negligible power difference of 0.80 bhp. Customers can readily opt for the top-end variant since the price difference is simply nominal.

Yamaha MT-15 Vs. Competition

The Yamaha MT-15 starts from Rs. 1,44,900 (ex-showroom) as compared to Rs. 1.29 lakh (ex-showroom) for the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. For the extra price, you do get extra mileage of 48 Kmpl while the TVS Apache offers 32 Kmpl. The power figures are 19 bhp and 20.20 bhp for the Yamaha and TVS bikes respectively while torque figures stand at 15 Nm and 16.8 Nm respectively as well. The MT-15 comes with a 155 cc engine while the Apache RTR 200 4V gets a 197.8 cc engine. Fuel tank capacity stands at 11 litres for the Yamaha MT-15 while it is 12 litres for the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V. Those looking for slightly more power at a lower price may opt for the TVS model in this case. Those seeking better mileage and do not mind paying a slightly higher price may consider the Yamaha.

The Yamaha MT-15 is priced from Rs. 1,44,900 (ex-showroom) onwards while the Royal Enfield Classic 350 is priced from Rs. 1.62 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards. The former offers 48 Kmpl in mileage while the latter offers 37 Kmpl. Power-wise, the Yamaha MT-15 gets a 155 cc engine that makes 19 bhp and 15 Nm while the Royal Enfield Classic 350 comes with a more powerful and superior 346 cc engine dishing out 19.10 bhp and 28 Nm of maximum torque. Fuel tank capacity also stands at 11 litres for the Yamaha MT-15 and 13.5 litres for the Royal Enfield Classic 350. Value-wise, the Yamaha MT-15 could be a better pick but if you want added brand value, power and punch, then the Royal Enfield Classic 350 is the best bet at a higher premium.

I graduated college and, like most Indians, obtained a job in IT. For my job, I needed a commuter. Commuters, on the other hand, felt 'commuter-ish' (Obviously). I was young (and still am) and needed something that would make the girls scream; something that kids would urge me to come over to and rev up. Duke, that was my initial thought. Duke was the rage at the time, but coming from a 110cc scooter, it was far too powerful for me. Moreover, the Duke had (and still has) a low mileage (Petrol prices = rocket). The legend R15 was the next best product that suited my needs. Why not RC? It has all of the issues I mentioned about Duke plus more. My back can't handle that much racy. After a month of deliberation, I went to the showroom to purchase the R15. As I approached the location. I noticed something. It didn't look like anything I'd seen previously. It appeared to be alien-like. At the same time, he looked quite masculine and shredd. It looked big; until I swung my leg over it. It was as small as my father's splendor (not a bad thing). They handed over the key to me. I went for a road test. I was absolutely stunned to learn that it was the powerful R15 in street fighter form. That test ride convinced me to switch from a Racy R15 to Yamaha's Darth Vader, the MT-15. It looks fantastic, has more than enough performance to excite me, gets excellent mileage (I recently got 59 kilometers), and costs just a touch less than the R15 (4.5 full tank petrols). The bike is still excellent and smooth after a year of use. There has been no degradation in performance, it gets excellent mileage, and I have no regrets about buying it. There are more capable bikes available. For me, however, MT 15 is the jack of all trades.

One of the most comfortable city commuters in this segment this is. The bike is nimble, agile and ready to swift and filter through the heavy traffic at any time of the day. The only drawback is that there is no Dual Channel ABS and at this price point I'd to like say.. it really needs to be Dual Channel ABS. After all this one sports a Yamaha engine and it doesn't fail to impress me. But.. hey there is no perfect Bike and this ain't one either. Y'all can enjoy some drama with no rear ABS and have some real fun with this ride.

So to begin with, Yamaha R15 V3 has blown my mind with its new and fresh techs, the refinement (Yes, it's a Yamaha ), etc but the only thing which was bothering me was the aggressive riding position. R15 v3 is a great bike for the tracks but I prefer upright position while covering larger distances and that's when Yamaha MT 15 came into the picture. Continue Reading:

All You Need to Know About the MT-15

The Yamaha MT-15 is a popular street-fighter 155 cc roadster from Yamaha India which majorly aims at capturing the interest of millennial buyers. It offers a muscular, aggressive, stylish and naked design while sharing underpinnings with the popular yet track themed YZF-R15 from Yamaha as well. It gets the same chassis and engine while also sharing other features. The MT-15 does lose some features in its Indian avatar including the upside-down forks for the global-spec model and the aluminum-swingarm of the Indian R15 V3.0.

The design is striking while the bike gets ample road presence indeed. It may not be as conventionally attractive but it offers a rugged appeal that is hard to match. The front fascia is styled aggressively and in a futuristic manner. It comes with twin slot DRLs (daytime running lights) and the LED headlight is neatly positioned between the twain, enabling a more robotic and highly contemporary transformer-esque design. There are no making bones about the fact that it is a polarizing design by all means. However, it is something that will certainly catch the attention of people on the road. There is the chiseled fuel tank along with the extended radiator shrouds for a more powerful look while the plastic belly pan rounds off the look to perfection. The rear portion is sleek and proportionately styled with the attractive LED tail lamp completing the design to perfection. The Yamaha MT-15 is one of the most striking bikes out there in its segment. The instrument panel has been taken straight away from the R15 and it does not get a few equipment bits for India. Hence, no USD forks are there while the wheels are also shared with the R15. There is just single-channel ABS in place of the R15’s dual-channel ABS that is available currently. The upright position for riding, flat handlebar and sportier design stance makes the bike attractive for riders. The millennial crowd will appreciate the sporty and superior ergonomics on this bike. The engine roars up with a familiar note since it is the same one as the YZF-R15 and the exhaust is also the same. The single cylinder 155 cc engine is liquid cooled and dishes out maximum power of 19 bhp at 10,000 rpm along with peak torque of 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The lower-end variant gets maximum power figures of 18.2 bhp as well. There is a 6-speed gearbox that is similar as the one used for the R15 and a standard slipper clutch. The final drive ratio is quite different this time around. This helps the MT-15 enjoy higher pulling power at both mid and low revs for superior tractability, especially while cutting through traffic and across stop lights. Yamaha has already stated that its MT-15 accelerates swifter than its R15 in the 0 to 80 kilometres per hour (kmph) band although top-end performance is where it slightly misses out. The maximum speed is somewhere at 118 kmph for the Yamaha MT-15 while it stands at around 129 kmph for the R15. The Yamaha MT-15 comes with kerb weight of 138 Kg which makes it at least 4 Kg lighter than the YZF R15. There is good cornering with more precision and the bike feels eager to respond and the suspension makes sure that road manners are impressive even in congested daily traffic. On longer highway stretches, riders may desire a little more punch and power. Highway drives may not always be that enjoyable although they will not be bland for sure.
