On July 1, 2017, the Government of India rolled out the Goods and Services Tax reforms. GST, one of the biggest economic reforms in recent Indian history had several implications with certain products and services becoming considerably more expensive as compared to earlier. The auto industry though rejoiced as the new country wide rates made it easier for manufacturers to do business and also gave rise to the one country one price principle. With cheaper hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and even electric cars, the Indian public too now has to pay less. Sadly though, the only type of 4-wheeled automobile that became more expensive were the cars and SUVs that packed hybrid technology under the skin. All hybrid cars and SUVs went from being taxed at 30.3 per cent to 43 per cent - an increase of 13.3 per cent. Hybrids, now classified under the highest GST tax slab immediately took a hit in prices with an increase of a few thousand to a few lakh rupees across various models like the Toyota Prius and Camry hybrid to the Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid. Considering the fact that hybrid cars are the immediate future in terms of moving to cleaner and more fuel economical transportation, this move by the Indian government was a little disappointing. However, there seems to be some good news around the corner. According to Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) Chairperson Vanaja Sarna the next GST council meeting which is due to be held at August 5 is likely to review the rates for hybrid cars.

Its official, Ferrari is making an SUV! The Italian supercar manufacturer that makes some of the most desirable four wheeled vehicles on the planet had until now stuck to their word and stated that they will never make an SUV to dilute the brand's image. Although the decision to make SUVs might annoy the Ferrarista around the world, it is actually a great thing. Porsche, a thoroughbred supercar manufacturer was in almost dire straits until it launched the Cayenne over a decade and a half ago. And since then, Porsche has showcased some of the best driving cars in the world mainly due to the profits that the likes of the Cayenne and the smaller Macan brings. Similarly, Lamborghini, makers of some of the world's most extreme supercars have also gone down the SUV route with the upcoming Urus, which is slated to double the manufacturer's sales.

Earlier this year, Tata Motors took a big leap towards the future with a brand new sub brand, Tamo. Tamos job was to be a showcase of sorts of the best technology that Tata Motors could put out and to offer specialised vehicles in very limited numbers. Fast forward to the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Tata Motors launched the first car under the Tamo brand, a sportscar no less, the new Racemo. With an advanced monocoque construction, the Tamo Racemo features some ridiculous features like a mid mounted 1.2-litre engine that makes 186 bhp and 210 Nm of torque. The Racemo also features butterfly doors that open upwards and a completely digital console that also features two side mounted and adjustable touch screens. The Racemo received rave acclaim from both Indian and global media and was seen as a bold and very important step towards the future for the Indian auto giant. And now, if rumours reported by another media house are to be believed, Indias newest sportscar has been killed even before it has had the chance to breathe its first breath. According to these rumours, Tata Motors has decided to temporarily shelf the Racemo project due to its high cost and lower returns in favour of using the same investments to give a boost to its currently ailing commercial vehicle segment. While this might make sense in the interim, here is why we think it is the wrong thing to do.

Poor (or rather, non-existent) road discipline on Indian roads has resulted in yet another fatal accident. The accident involved three cars, a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, a Lamborghini Huracan and a Maruti Suzuki Eeco, which could have very well been avoided if the driver that caused the accident had basic lane sense. Captured on CCTV on the Noida expressway, the driver of a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire is seen swerving wildly out of his lane and clipping the white Lamborghini Huracan. The Huracan driver, to unsuccessfully avoid the out of control Dzire swerved left and in turn hit a Maruti Suzuki Eeco van.
