Indian manufacturing giant, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has finally launched the diesel variant of the eagerly awaited Alto at the ongoing Auto Expo 2016. Ever since its launch, the Alto has continuously managed to sell in huge numbers and till date, holds the title of being the best-selling car in India. The launch of a diesel variant is a huge step for the company as the Alto will now set a new benchmark in the small car segment.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto diesel comes fitted with the same 793cc oil-burner used to power the Celerio diesel. Power figures will be to the tune of 47bhp with a peak torque rating of 125Nm which should give the light-weight hatchback ample power and zippiness for city commutes. The car will come with a standard 5-speed manual transmission with an option to choose a 4-speed AMT currently doing its rounds in the Alto K10 and Celerio hatchbacks.
In terms of looks, the car retains the same form factor found on the Alto 800. Features include optional dual front airbags for driver and passenger, ABS, infotainment system with USB and BlueTooth connectivity, power windows, internally adjustable ORVMs, and power steering.
Maruti Suzuki has been the undisputed champion of the small car segment in India and with the launch of yet another version of the Alto 800, which is India's best selling car, will be hoping to cement its place at the top. The carmaker is renowned for making small, efficient and affordable cars and has exploited the market's perception of the brand being synonymous with reliability and serviceability. So far, only Renault has managed to somewhat give competition to the Indian automotive giant with the immediate success of the Kwid but the launch of the diesel Alto is yet another feather in the Indian carmaker's cap and should ensure that the Indian manufacturer keeps its throne for yet another year.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Diesel will launch on XX XXXX, 2016. Prices start at Rs X.XX lakh.
