The Indian auto industry has grown exponentially in the past few years, as an increasing number of global brands started venturing into our market. In fact, brands like Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, and Renault among others have transformed India into an export hub for some of its popular offerings. In terms of demographic, carmakers export vehicles out of India largely to the Middle East market, Russia, Australia, South Africa as well a few European markets. So, as part of our 75th Independence Day celebration, we list down the top 5 India’s highest car exporters during the April- July 2022 period.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) is the country’s largest passenger car exporter and has been distributing cars from its Chennai plant since 1999, and presently exports to over 87 countries. The Hyundai Verna and the new Hyundai Creta lead the pack followed by the Hyundai Grand i10, Hyundai i20, and Hyundai Santro. In the April-July 2022 period, the South Korean carmaker exported 47,871 units as compared to the 42,088 units distributed in the same period last fiscal, registering a growth of 12.8 per cent. Cumulatively, the company has exported more than 30 lakh units.
After the Hyundai Verna, the company exports a large number of Creta's.
Possibly one of the largest exporters of cars in India, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) led the exports during the April-July 2022 period. The company exported 88,990 PVs in the period under review, up 29.57 per cent from 66,059 units in the same period of the previous fiscal year. Maruti Suzuki’s top PV export markets include Latin America, ASEAN, Africa, the Middle East, and neighboring regions while its top five export models comprise Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, and the latest Maruti Suzuki Brezza. Since 1986, Maruti Suzuki has exported 22.5 lakh vehicles to over 100 countries.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is one of the most exported vehicles from the Indian plant.
Kia India crossed one lakh cumulative export milestones since commencing overseas shipments in September 2019. The automaker achieved the figure in less than two and a half years, reiterating its commitment to developing India as an export hub. Kia India exports Kia Seltos and Kia Sonet to 91 countries in the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America, Mexico, and Asia-Pacific. Currently, the share of exports of Seltos and Sonet stands at 77 and 23 per cent, respectively. From the beginning of exports till January 2022, the company has shipped a total of 1,01,734 vehicles.

Led by improved chip supplies and new model launches, the Indian arm of Volkswagen Group, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India aims to grow its exports by more than 40 per cent in 2022 with 50,000 units. Europe's largest automotive group, which is using India as a beachhead to develop South-East Asia and Africa markets, will be adding 10 new countries to build its volumes. The Group has so far exported over half a million cars from India in the last decade with made-in-India cars being sold in over 61 countries. At its peak, Skoda VW exported over 90,000 cars annually which helped the Group utilise the factory better and stay green.

French carmaker Renault India crossed the 1 lakh export milestone this year since the commencement of the distribution of the Renault Duster in 2012. At present, Renault exports made in India Renault Kwid, Renault Triber, and the Renault Kiger to 14 countries across SAARC, Asia Pacific, Indian Oceanic Region, South Africa, and East Africa region. Renault India begin manufacturing in Chennai, India in 2010. Additionally, the company began exporting the Renault Kwid in 2016.
Renault India began local manufacturing at Oragadam near Chennai in the year 2010.
