Indian FTR 1200 Range Recalled In India Over Faulty Liquid Cooling System
Key Highlights
  • The recall affects the Indian FTR 1200 manufactured in 2019, 2020 & 2022
  • The coolant could leak from the engine on to the bike's rear tyre
  • The hot coolant could potentially burn the rider's legs as well

Indian Motorcycle has announced a voluntary recall for the FTR 1200 range of bikes in India. The company has issued a recall for bikes that were manufactured in 2019, 2020 and 2022. There were no FTRs manufactured in 2021. The company has recalled the FTR motorcycles due to an issue with the liquid-cooling system that might cause hot coolant to leak on the rear tyre. This is part of a global recall campaign that the manufacturer initiated recently and considering the bikes are fully imported in India, the same has been extended here too.

Indian Motorcycle says the issue is alarming since the hot coolant spilling on the rear tyre could reduce grip levels, while it could also spill on the rider's legs causing severe burns. The company has not disclosed if there were any incidents of the coolant leaking from the engine in any of the bikes sold in India.

Indian Motorcycle will replace the faulty component with a more durable one that performs better at operating temperatures

Indian Motorcycle will reach out to the affected customers in the country via its dealer network. The manufacturer has not detailed what would be the exact change made to solve the issue. However, the company's global recall did say that the part will be rectified and "manufactured subject to a material change to increase performance at operating temperatures and reduce manufacturing variation." As far as voluntary recalls go, all repairs are free of charge.

Globally, about 6,315 motorcycles are said to be affected by the same recall involving the FTR 1200. The production dates for affected bikes range from January 12, 2018 through August 12, 2022. The company first found out about the issue during development testing in February this year and investigated the matter further with its component supplier. The company also found out that about 64 separate incidents of coolant leaks on the FTR 1200 in the US, wherein the hot coolant came in contact with the rider in four cases. There were no fatalities as a result of the issue.
