The Madras High Court, on Monday, issued an order that bans all kinds of banners, hoarding, and advertisement at major traffic signals in the state of Tamil Nadu. The move comes in light after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by social activist "Traffic" Ramaswamy seeking action against police officials in Tiruchirappalli, who had failed to remove illegal banners erected as part of the celebrations. The high court has stated that these hoardings pose inconveniences for the common man and can cause accidents.

Last week, the Tamil Nadu government had submitted in Madras High Court that all illegal banners erected in connection with the birth centenary celebrations of ruling AIADMK founder late M G Ramachandran at Tiruchirappalli should be removed forthwith. Advocate-General Vijay Narayanan had submitted that 220 other banners which were erected with the permission of the authorities concerned would be removed after the function was over.

The bench was chaired by Justice M M Sundresh and Justice M Sundar. The HC directed Girija Vaidyanathan, Chief Secretary, Tamil Nadu government to ensure a clean atmosphere is maintained in public spaces, in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, 1959.
