Planning To Buy A Pre-Owned Maruti Suzuki Ignis: 7 Things You Need To Know
Key Highlights
  • The Maruti Suzuki Ignis still remains a popular choice for young buyers
  • The Ignis top variants are the ones to go for with all the features
  • The Ignis diesel examples are high mileage but the 1.3 motor is frugal

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis remains a quirky yet popular offering in the hatchback segment and one that drives quite well too. The tallboy hatchback looks young, and fun and gets all the bells and whistles for those looking for something different from Maruti's stable. The Ignis was launched in January 2017 with petrol and diesel engine options, while also getting an AMT option. The diesel version was discontinued in June 2018, while a facelift arrived in February 2020 to bring cosmetic upgrades as well as feature additions. This makes the Maruti Suzuki Ignis one of the more potent hatchbacks you can get your hands on in the pre-owned car market. Here are seven things you need to know about the pre-owned Ignis hatchback.

The Ignis has aged well and still looks relevant amidst newer offerings in the segment

1. The Ignis remains one of the more well-designed cars in our opinion from Maruti Suzuki and the pre-facelift version has aged rather well. The hatch's short overhangs, raked C-pillar, and squared lamps, all work in its favour. The earliest examples of the Ignis are over five years old now and they still look fairly fresh.

2. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis diesel remains a rare version given its short production run but the model with the 1.3-litre DDiS engine was a frugal unit. Even the pre-owned examples on sale will an average 60,000 to 80,000 km on the odometer, which is pretty common. In contrast, the petrol version is rather less driven and should be the one to consider if you are looking at primarily city drives and under 1,000-1,200 km every month.

Look for the top variants on the used Ignis that come with more features and safety equipment as well

3. The Ignis is also fairly loaded for its age and the tallboy design brings a spacious cabin. The top variants are the ones to go for that come with 15-inch alloy wheels, LED DRLs, a reverse camera with parking sensors, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The dual-tone treatment in the cabin along with toggle switches do give it a premium look, making it a likeable alternative to other budget hatchbacks.

4. Do look out for any broken switches which tend to be the case in case of rough use. Older cars may also see worn-out panels and switches, while the lower panels tend to rattle and fall apart on the older examples. Check for these issues specifically on the pre-owned car when you go for a test drive.

5. Both the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and the 1.3-litre DDiS engines are fairly reliable and parts are easy to source. The model remains very much on sale with the same mechanicals and maintenance costs should be on par with the age. With respect to bigger expenses, do make sure the AMT gearbox slots in properly and have it inspected, even though the unit is known to be reliable. On high mileage diesel cars, do make sure to check the injectors and life of the turbocharger.

The AMT gearbox is reliable but does look for a detailed service history on the used examples

6. If you are planning to buy a used Ignis hatch, it's well equipped on the safety front in the top variant with features like dual front airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, ISOFIX child seat anchorages, as well as ABS with EBD.

7. The 2017-2019 Maruti Suzuki Ignis was always an expensive offering for its size prices of pre-owned versions start as low as Rs. 3.5 lakh, going up to Rs. 6 lakh for more recent examples, depending on the variant, age, kilometres on the odometer, and the location. Do check for cleaner examples with the company service history for peace of mind ownership experience.
