Hyderabad-based Pure EV has issued a recall for 2,000 units of its Etrance+ and Epluto 7G range of scooters following a fatal incident surrounding the battery pack of one of its scooters in Nazimabad, Telangana. The battery pack of a Pure EV scooter left to charge over night exploded inside a home claiming the life of an 80-year-old man. In a statement, Pure EV said that the recalled vehicles and their batteries would undergo a “thorough check for their health.”

“We shall inspect the battery for any imbalance issues and shall calibrate through our device Batrics Faraday. Additionally the BMS (Battery Management System) and charger calibration shall be carried out as required,” the company said.

As per reports, the incident took place on Wednesday when the owner of the scooter had removed the battery from the scooter and placed it to charge in his living room. The deceased was identified as B Ramaswamy, the father of the scooter owner, while the two injured included his wife and grandson.

The battery reportedly exploded around 4 am on April 21, causing severe burn injuries to the three while Prakash and his wife suffered minor burns in an effort to put out the flames. The injured were rushed to the hospital where Ramaswamy's condition worsened before he subsequently succumbed to his injuries en route to Hyderabad for better treatment.

Based on the reports, we will issue necessary orders on the defaulting companies. We will soon issue quality-centric guidelines for Electric Vehicles.
In the follow up to the incident, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari took to Twitter saying that the government has constituted a committee to look into the several EV related incidents and make recommendations on how to prevent similar situations.
Gadkari added that should a company be found negligent in their manufacturing and quality check process, a heavy penalty would be imposed and a recall of all defective vehicles ordered.
