Triumph Scrambler 1200: 5 Things You Should Know
Key Highlights
  • Triumph Scrambler 1200 gets 21-inch front wheel, long travel suspension
  • Powered by 'high power' 1200 cc parallel-twin engine
  • World's first integrated GoPro control system, new TFT panel

Triumph Motorcycles has unveiled the new Triumph Scrambler 1200, and this time, the Scrambler moniker gets even more off-road ready! Triumph already has a Scrambler on sale in India, and that bike, the Triumph Street Scrambler, is based on the Street Twin, with minor cosmetic upgrades. The Scrambler 1200 though, gets more than just a bigger engine; it gets a retuned 'high torque' 1200 cc parallel-twin engine, and proper off-road spec suspension, wheels and a whole lot of electronic rider aids as well. The bike will be available in two variants - the base Scrambler 1200 XC and the top-spec Scrambler 1200 XE. Here's a look at the top 5 things you need to know about the new Triumph Street Scrambler 1200.

Engine

Both the Scrambler 1200 XC and the 1200 XE are powered by the same 1200 cc "high power" engine of the Triumph Thurxton R, but the engine has been retuned for more power and grunt lower in the rev range than full top-end acceleration. The 27-degree firing order parallel-twin engine has a different state of tune to make it put out 89 bhp at 7,400 rpm, and peak torque of 110 Nm at 3,950 rpm. But even in this state of tune, the Scrambler 1200's engine is 12.5 per cent more powerful than the Bonneville T120, and 38 per cent more powerful than the Street Scrambler. And service intervals are now at 16,000 km. Also standard is a torque-assist clutch to give a light feel on the lever.

Chassis, Suspension and Brakes

The Scrambler 1200 gets a steel tubular double cradle frame, and Showa forks and Ohlins rear shocks. But there's some difference in the set-up. The 1200 XC gets 200 mm suspension travel at both the rear and front, while the XE gets 250 mm suspension travel. The Showa front fork on the XC is a 45 mm upside down fork, while the XE gets a 47 mm upside down fork with gold anodised finish. The Scrambler 1200 gets a large 21-inch front spoked wheel, and a 17-inch rear wheel, both shod with tubeless dual-sport type block pattern Metzeler Tourance tyres.

Braking is handled by dual front 320 mm discs on the front wheel gripped by Brembo M50 monobloc calipers and a single 255 mm disc on the rear wheel, gripped by a Brembo two-piston floating caliper. Both bikes get switchable ABS, but the XE trim goes a step further and offer switchable cornering ABS, powered by an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Dry weight of the XC is 205 kg, while the XE weighs 207 kg. That's not exactly lightweight by any standard, and coupled with the tall stance and seat height (840 mm for the XC, and 870 mm for the XE), the Scrambler 1200 isn't for beginners or those seeking to start out riding off-road.

Features and More

The Triumph Scrambler 1200 come with five riding modes - Road, Rain, Off-Road, Sport and a fully customisable Rider mode. And each mode adjusts the throttle response, ABS settings and traction control. The XE variant also receives an "Off-Road Pro" mode, which completely switches off ABS and traction control, and uses the off-road throttle map. The IMU on the XE variant also constantly calculates roll, pitch, yaw and lean angle and acceleration rates, and accordingly responds with safety features.

The Scrambler 1200 also boasts of an all-new full-colour TFT display which boasts of several unique features, including a fully customisable start-up screen message that has the owner's name. The highlight though, is the integrated GoPro control system, which is operated by a Bluetooth accessory. The connection and control is displayed on the panel, and the rider can take photos and videos directly from the switchgear.

Design

The existing 900 cc Triumph Street Scrambler offers some amount of off-road capability, but the new Scrambler 1200 takes that to a whole new level! Although roughly based on the Bonneville T120 platform, the design of the Scrambler 1200 looks more like a slightly bigger version of the Street Scrambler, but with a more purposeful "off-road ready" stance with the long travel suspension, large 21-inch front wheel, standard aluminium bash plate, serrated footpegs and small aluminium mudguards. The seat is a flat single piece unit and overall, the Scrambler 1200 looks like a proper retro Scrambler but the Bonneville DNA is evident in the silhouette.

Launch Date & Prices

In India, only the Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC is expected to be introduced first. And it should be launched by early 2019. With the amount of equipment and technology, expect the Scrambler 1200 XC to be priced very close to the Triumph Tiger 800 range. We expect prices in India to be in the region of Rs. 11-12 lakh (ex-showroom) when the Scrambler 1200 is launched. Hopefully, we get to ride the bike before the launch to bring you a first ride impression, so keep watching this space!
