Triumph Tiger Sport 660: What We Know So Far
Key Highlights
  • Triumph Tiger Sport 660 to be based on Triumph Trident 660
  • The Trident 660's engine makes 80 bhp @ 10,250 rpm, 64 Nm @ 6,250 rpm
  • Triumph Tiger Sport 660 is expected to be priced at around Rs. 7.5 lakh

Triumph Motorcycles has released images of a brand-new touring motorcycle, which is currently under development. From the images we can make out that the new bike, to be called, the Triumph Tiger Sport 660, is almost production ready, even though it's been wrapped in camouflage print to hide the contours of the bodywork. The new Triumph Tiger Sport 660 will be based on the Triumph Trident 660 platform, and is expected to make its global debut in the next few months. We can expect the bike to be launched in India in early 2022, and here's a look at what we know about the new Tiger Sport 660 so far.

Engine & Performance

The new Triumph Tiger Sport 660 will be based on the Triumph Trident 660 platform, so it's expected to share the engine, chassis and swingarm with the Trident 660. On the Trident 660, the inline three-cylinder engine makes 80 bhp at 10,250 rpm and peak torque of 64 Nm at 6,250 rpm. The Trident 660 gets a service interval of 16,000 km (or 12 months), and comes with unlimited mileage warranty for two years. The same is expected to be offered on the Tiger Sport 660. At this stage, we're not sure if Triumph has continued with the same state of tune, or made any changes to the engine to suit the touring credentials of the Tiger Sport 660. In all likelihood, the state of tune of the 660 cc engine is expected to remain identical to the Trident 660.

The Triumph Tiger Sport 660 features a design which is more sport-tourer than a full-blown mid-size ADV

Design

The Triumph Tiger Sport 660 sports a half-fairing design with a tall windscreen, underscoring the adventure touring design DNA of the Triumph Tiger family. Compared to the Trident 660, the Tiger Sport 660 should have a more upright riding position with taller handlebars, and better wind protection for long hours in the saddle, suitable for touring. The images released of the Tiger Sport 660 prototype are wrapped in camouflage, so it's difficult to ascertain the creases and cuts of the bodywork. But overall, the design will be sportier than the rest of the Triumph Tiger range.

The Triumph Tiger Sport 660 shares the same basic platform as the Trident 660, but gets more comfortable ergonomics, a half-fairing and a windscreen to aid in better touring ability

Up front, the face features a twin-pod headlight mounted on the fairing, somewhat reminiscent of Italian design, while the muscular fuel tank complements the busy front end, along with the windscreen. Lighting is expected to be full-LED, and the Tiger Sport 660 features a single step-up seat, which appears to be slightly longer than the Trident 660. The triple exhaust headers combine into an underbelly exhaust unit, which looks identical to the Trident 660. Like the Trident 660, the Tiger Sport 660 looks like it's got styling inputs from Rodolfo Frascoli, the motorcycle designer behind the Tiger 900 range.

The Triumph Tiger Sport 660 will be based on the Triumph Trident 660 platform. The chassis and cycle parts are also expected to be shared, but suspension travel is expected to be increased, while the rear subframe may be reinforced for better luggage carrying capacity.

Chassis & Cycle Parts

The Tiger Sport 660 is expected to share the same steel perimeter frame of the Trident 660, but the rear subframe could be reinforced for more rigidity and better luggage carrying capability. Wheels are 17-inch units front and rear, and are shod with Michelin Road 5 rubber, just like the Trident 660. Suspension is expected to be from Showa, with the same 41 mm diameter forks, but with some increased travel. We're not sure if the suspension will be adjustable on the Tiger Sport 660. Braking hardware will be provided by Nissin.

Like the Trident 660, the Tiger Sport 660 is also expected to get two riding modes, slip-and-assist clutch, switchable traction control, and ABS

Electronics & Features

Like the Trident 660, the upcoming Triumph Tiger Sport 660 is also expected to get a host of features like Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation, ride-by-wire and switch-cube GoPro control. Two riding modes, Road and Rain, are expected, along with a standard slip and assist clutch, and switchable traction control and ABS. Also expected are self-cancelling turn indicators.

Price & Availability

The Triumph Tiger Sport 660 will be offered in international markets in the next few months, and we expect the bike to be launched in India, sometime in early 2022, if not towards the end of 2021. Prices are expected to be in the region of Rs. 7.5 lakh (Ex-showroom), with the bike hitting showrooms early next year. Considering this is the second model in the Trident 660 platform, we won't be surprised if Triumph introduces a more off-road centric model later in 2022, calling it the Triumph Tiger 660 Rally! Now, that would be something!
