Overview

The Tata Nexon EV has firmly established itself as India’s best-selling electric vehicle, catering to urban dwellers seeking an affordable, eco-friendly, and practical electric SUV. Introduced as part of Tata's push toward electric mobility, the Nexon EV comes in two variants – Mid Range (MR) and Long Range (LR) – with each offering different battery capacities. Priced between ₹14.99 lakh and ₹19.29 lakh, it has quickly become a popular choice in the ₹15-20 lakh EV segment. With its modern design, efficient powertrain, and value-for-money proposition, the Nexon EV has revolutionized the Indian EV market.

The Tata Nexon EV boasts a futuristic and aggressive design, borrowing elements from the facelifted Nexon ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) model. The sleek LED DRLs paired with the bold grille give the EV a modern and stylish front end. The Nexon EV's coupe-like roofline and strong character lines along the sides add to its sporty stance. Additionally, the aerodynamic design helps in improving efficiency while enhancing its overall appeal.

Nexon EV Backview

The gloss black roof, contrast-color accents, and 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels offer a premium look. The charging port is smartly integrated into the front, maintaining the vehicle’s sleek profile. At the rear, the EV features a stylish LED taillight bar connecting the two taillamps, emphasizing its width and adding to its road presence.

Nexon EV Charging

While the overall design is largely inspired by the Nexon ICE, the subtle EV-specific touches, such as the blue highlights, set the Nexon EV apart from its petrol and diesel counterparts. The EV badging is discreet yet noticeable, letting everyone know this vehicle is part of the green revolution.

he Tata Nexon EV offers two battery options – a 30 kWh battery pack for the MR variant and a larger 40.5 kWh battery pack for the LR variant. The MR variant comes with a 127 bhp electric motor, while the LR variant gets a slightly more powerful motor producing 143 bhp. Both variants offer impressive torque figures, with 215 Nm of torque available instantly due to the electric powertrain.

Nexon EV Drive Mode

The Nexon EV delivers a smooth and quiet driving experience, with instant torque making acceleration brisk and effortless. In city driving, the Nexon EV performs admirably, with the 0-100 km/h time of 9.2 seconds for the MR and 8.8 seconds for the LR, making it faster than many ICE counterparts. The Nexon EV comes equipped with three driving modes – Eco, City, and Sport. City mode offers a balanced experience, making it ideal for daily commutes, while Sport mode unleashes the full potential of the motor, providing a spirited and engaging drive.

Nexon EV Engine

Regenerative braking is another standout feature in the Nexon EV, with three levels of adjustability. At its highest level, the regenerative braking allows for one-pedal driving, significantly enhancing the range by capturing energy during deceleration.

The Tata Nexon EV offers an excellent ride quality, with its suspension tuned for comfort, even on rough and uneven surfaces. The slightly raised stance and independent suspension setup ensure that the vehicle soaks up most bumps with ease, making it ideal for Indian road conditions. At higher speeds, the Nexon EV remains composed, providing a smooth and comfortable ride.

Nexon EV Riding

In terms of handling, the electric SUV feels nimble and easy to drive, thanks to its light and responsive steering. While the steering lacks the feedback seen in performance-oriented vehicles, it strikes a good balance for city maneuvering and highway cruising. The low center of gravity, owing to the floor-mounted battery, ensures minimal body roll, even when cornering at higher speeds.

The Nexon EV also comes equipped with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear, providing adequate stopping power. However, a slight improvement in brake pedal feel could enhance driver confidence during emergency braking.

Inside the Nexon EV, the cabin is both spacious and comfortable, offering plenty of headroom and legroom for all occupants. The premium leatherette seats with contrast stitching add a touch of luxury, while the ventilated front seats are particularly useful in India’s hot climate. The seats provide ample support during long drives, ensuring a comfortable experience for both the driver and passengers.

Nexon EV Interiors

The rear seats are equally comfortable, with reclining backrests and good legroom for passengers. However, the lack of rear AC vents might be a slight disadvantage for rear occupants during hot weather. Additionally, the boot space of 350 liters is adequate for a weekend getaway, and the split-folding rear seats allow for more cargo flexibility when needed.

Nexon EV Parking Feature

The cabin is well-insulated, keeping road and wind noise to a minimum, which enhances the overall comfort and driving experience.

Pros

  • Impressive real-world range of 340-350 km in the long-range (LR) version
  • Feature-rich cabin with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen and ventilated seats
  • Smooth and responsive acceleration with 215 Nm of torque

Cons

  • Some software glitches, including charging indicators and infotainment connectivity issues
  • Range drops significantly with spirited driving
  • AC and data port access are awkwardly placed

Verdict

The Tata Nexon EV remains India's best-selling electric vehicle for good reason. It offers solid performance, practical range, and a host of modern features. While it has a few software quirks and charging concerns in real-world usage, its low running costs and overall practicality make it an attractive option for city dwellers. The Nexon EV strikes a fine balance between price, performance, and everyday usability, justifying its position as the market leader.
