Overview

The Tata Punch EV represents Tata Motors’ continued foray into the electric vehicle (EV) space, following in the footsteps of the Nexon EV and Tiago EV. Built on the company’s new pure EV platform, Acti.ev, the Punch EV is designed to provide the practicality and ease of a micro-SUV while embracing the benefits of electric mobility. With a strong focus on affordability, versatility, and range, this vehicle aims to be a game-changer in the urban EV segment, offering two range options – 315 km and 421 km. The Punch EV is perfectly positioned for environmentally conscious city dwellers and adventure seekers alike.

The Tata Punch EV takes cues from its ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) sibling, but with distinct electric-specific design elements. At first glance, it’s clear that the Punch EV has drawn inspiration from the updated Nexon EV. The front fascia features connected LED daytime running lights that perform a dynamic welcome and goodbye animation, lending a futuristic feel. Below, LED projector headlamps light the way, while sequential LED turn indicators further enhance its modern aesthetic.

One of the most noticeable changes in the Punch EV is the location of the charging port at the front, covered by a panel with the new Tata logo. While the overall profile remains similar to the petrol-powered Punch, it gets 16-inch alloy wheels with aero inserts for improved efficiency. The rear styling, with its tri-arrow LED tail lamps, shark-fin antenna, and refreshed rear bumper, adds to its sporty appeal.

Dimensionally, the Punch EV has grown slightly. It’s 30 mm longer and 12 mm taller than its ICE counterpart, owing to the integration of the battery pack. The ground clearance of 190 mm ensures the Punch EV maintains its SUV-like stance, despite the extra height caused by the floor-mounted battery.

Tata Punch EV Front View

The Punch EV is available with two battery pack options – Standard (25 kWh) and Long Range (35 kWh). The Standard version is powered by a 60 kW electric motor, generating 80 bhp and 114 Nm of torque, while the Long Range variant boosts performance with 121 bhp and 190 Nm of torque. This combination makes the Punch EV a lively and responsive vehicle, particularly in the Long Range model, which surprises with its quick acceleration and stable high-speed performance.

The car features three driving modes – Eco, Comfort, and Sport – each offering a different balance between performance and range optimization. In Sport mode, the Punch EV feels noticeably more spirited, with reduced regenerative braking, allowing for a more engaging driving experience.

Tata Punch EV Battery & Charging Port

Like other Tata EVs, the Punch EV offers three levels of regenerative braking. At Level 3, the system provides strong regen braking, which enables one-pedal driving for increased efficiency. While it may take some getting used to, this feature is particularly useful for maximizing range in stop-and-go city traffic.

The Punch EV benefits from its slightly raised suspension, which is tuned for comfort. The ride quality is commendable, even over uneven surfaces, thanks to the softer suspension setup. While it may feel a bit bouncy at lower speeds, the suspension truly shines on smoother roads, delivering a plush and composed ride. Tata has managed to retain the solid driving dynamics of the ICE Punch, making the Punch EV a confidence-inspiring vehicle to drive.

Tata Punch Riding & Handling

Handling is sharp for an SUV of its size. The Punch EV maintains stability, even when cornering at higher speeds, though the electric steering lacks the feel of traditional hydraulic systems. However, the steering provides good heft, making it easy to maneuver in urban settings. Visibility from the driver’s seat is excellent, thanks to the higher seating position typical of SUVs.

The interior of the Tata Punch EV is well thought out and modern, mirroring much of the design language seen in the Nexon EV. The two-spoke steering wheel with the illuminated Tata logo and capacitive buttons provides a sleek, minimalist look. The cabin is spacious for its class, with a layout designed to optimize comfort for both the driver and passengers. Front seats are ventilated and offer adequate support, while the rear bench is flat but comfortable enough for two adults and a child.

Tata Punch Rear Seats

The absence of rear AC vents is noticeable, especially in warmer climates, but the electric sunroof and air purifier enhance cabin comfort. The Punch EV also includes convenient features like USB Type A and Type C ports, a wireless phone charger, and a rotary dial for gear selection.

Tata Punch EV Boot Space

Despite its relatively compact size, the Punch EV offers 366 liters of boot space, which is sufficient for most urban needs. The lack of a spare tire is compensated by the inclusion of a puncture repair kit. Additionally, the Punch EV is the first Tata vehicle to offer a frunk (front trunk), albeit with a modest 5 kg capacity, ideal for storing the portable charger.

Tata Punch EV Rear Seats

Pros

  • Impressive range options of up to 421 km
  • Fun to drive with quick acceleration and strong handling
  • Advanced tech features including a 10.25-inch touchscreen and Arcade.ev

Cons

  • Lacks rear AC vents, which would be useful in hot climates
  • Some plastic components reduce the premium feel
  • Parity between claimed and real-world range is still high

Verdict

The Tata Punch EV stands out as a strong contender in the EV space, delivering a great balance of driving fun, advanced features, and practicality. With its appealing design and tech-laden cabin, it caters well to modern EV buyers. However, the lack of rear AC vents and slight issues with plastic quality detract from its premium appeal. Despite these minor shortcomings, the Punch EV's strong range options and performance make it an excellent choice for city commuters and electric enthusiasts alike.
