Latest Update on New Verna

Hyundai Verna is a hugely popular car in India in its segment. It has come up with five cars within a year. The previous cars from Hyundai like Creta, Aura and Elantra were a bit on the pricey side and so are people concerned. But the good thing about Hyundai Verna is it’s compensated for the disappointment the company caused due to its over-the-top cars. The design is known as ‘sensuous sporty’ popularly. The car has undergone a facelift also. This car is striking in its looks and it’s not heavy on your purse. There are new engines and gearboxes in this one. The cabin has also been given a retouch. The interior is good but it doesn’t have split-folding on the rear side. It was launched in 2020. The car bears a new language of design that is sensuous and sporty. It’s bold as well and quite expressive in its own right. There have been some remarkable changes in the front. The grilles have been made bigger and it has a darker shade of chrome. The headlamps are LED and they have been fitted anew. The bumper looks sporty. There is a faux diffuser making the car appear athletic.

I have been driving this car daily almost 5 months from purchase (Sep 2017), i will share my experiences so far. I am not a rash driver and also i take care of the car very well. 1. The SX model is very stylish, even though i own an EX model. (Now i regret though for not going SX) 2. Mileage is very good at highways, provided you cruise around 80-100. No car can provide better mileage more than 110. i got around 22-23kmpl approx. But definitely more than 20kmpl. City driving mode(traffic in every corner situation) is really really bad. It gives around 12kmpl. 3. its a good Power beast, sometimes i push the accelerator pedal in 2nd gear while driving at 20kmph, and the turbo surge is really amazing such a way that you could feel the pull of the vehicle. but it doesn't work well when the car is fully loaded. 4. Uneven / Bad roads, incase you are driving this vehicle at bad roads, you wont feel most of the bumps at all as long as you drive at moderate speed. The suspension is quite stiffer. 5. Paint Quality, (i own Fiery Red), they say usually red colour is hard to maintain, i wash my car every weekend with a good Ph neutral car soap and use good quality micro fibre towels to clean it, but still the paint is of soft nature, it is getting some marks so easily, even if you accidentally lean on the car you would notice some kind of marks. 6. Ground Clearance, when it is fully loaded it cannot take speed breakers very easy, definitely there will be bumps on the under body. 8 out of 10 times the car's underbody gets a hit when crossing over a speed breaker 7. When the car was brand new, the noise levels was very less and now after 5700 kms i feel like the diesel noise is creeping inside. Hyundai could have provided a good sounding horn. I like Ford and Volkswagen though. Provided you take better care while driving and after driving(cleaning), this car can be with you with less maintenance. But the cost difference between EX and SX is so big in such way i missed very important features. i have not hit the second service so far, i will update after reaching 10k kms. Thanks, Guru.

After a lot of heart burn and confusion, we final got our new Hyundai Verna on 22nd August, 2018. Heartburn because we had to part with our not so old Mahindra Quanto and confusion as we were not sure whether to go in for a compact SUV or a premium hatch. Verna was nowhere in the radar. But one test ride is all it took to sway our decision and finally we went ahead and booked the SX VTVT (Petrol) version. To begin with, Hyundai is always known for the quality fit and finish on their vehicles. Also the various features it offers on the various variants is at most times class leading. Now coming to the Verna, driving dynamics of the car are just perfect. There is not much to complain about on this front thought some of the experts do lament the poor braking on the car. But, I am no "spirited" driver and love to cruise along between 40-50 km/hr the city. So braking has not been my point of lament. The suspension is tuned just perfect and the car takes on road undulations with finesse. The cruise control is also an icing on the cake. The new an improved exterior of the car is definitely a head turner and the major design elements from the Elantra do give the Verna a much needed premium upgraded look. On the interiors front the there is ample of tech and comfort rolled in together. The touch screen, auto climate control, MID, sound from the audio setup, quick charging USB port as well as the rear AC vents leave no room for complaints. The only issue here is the space for the back passengers. Hyundai could have given some more room in terms of shoulder room and leg room. As for the very important question of "Kitna Deti Hai?" well my car give me between 10-11 kmpl in the city and on the one off highway drive it churned out 17.9 kmpl. Mind you, this is purely based on your driving dynamics and would defer from driver to driver. Finally, buy the Next Gen Hyundai Verna if you are going to drive yourself and if you can afford the mileage on offer else go in for the Honda City for space or the New Ciaz for mileage. As for me I am glad I got this car and even though I did stretch my budget a bit I don not have any regrets. Cheers!!!
I'm proud of the Verna owner !!!

New Hyundai Verna Expert Review

Hyundai Verna

The Hyundai Verna was always an admired sedan in the country. It has surmounted several competitors and challenges en route toward becoming one of the company’s most successful sedans in the Indian market. The Verna first arrived in 2011 and got another makeover in 2017, followed by an updated version in 2020.

How is the design?

The Verna gets a refreshed and attractive design as has been its hallmark for several years. There is a bigger and frameless grille in front, along with a sportier look and creases and cuts aplenty. The fog lamps are swept back and a tiny spoiler is present as well. The coupe-Esque roofline and the boot spoiler come from the previous version while the new alloys also look stylish enough. The Verna has also been raised slightly, giving it a taller stance. The exhaust tips get a chrome finish at the back although the lower bumper treatment does not look as appealing (although opinions are subjective).

How does it perform?

Diesel 1493 cc 113.45 BHP 250 Nm
Petrol 1497 cc 113.18 BHP 143.8 Nm
Petrol (turbo GDi) 998 cc 118.41 BHP 172 Nm

The turbo petrol engine is smooth and powerful enough while the automatic gearbox shifts smoothly. The engine feels slightly sluggish at lower speeds although a few presses on the accelerator with some downshifting are enough to unleash the torque tucked into this engine. The Verna comes with a powerful enough mid-range as well. There is great acceleration. Sporty driving is ensured with this engine. The regular diesel engine performs just fine on the road, being more refined and smoother than before. There is sizably good torque and power with this engine and it can be a great highway cruiser or for regular long commutes. At the same time, the 1497 cc petrol engine also performs quite well. The Verna’s engines are all refined in their manners, with sizable power on tap. However, it is the turbo petrol that feels the most assured and sporty of the lot.

How’s the mileage?

• Diesel Manual- 25 kmpl
• Diesel Automatic- 21.3 kmpl
• Petrol Automatic- 19.2 kmpl
• Petrol Manual- 17.7 kmpl

How’s the driving experience?

The Hyundai Verna does have a vocal note upon hard revving and it is otherwise enjoyable to drive. The Verna has better steering now with more weight and directness. The car feels leaner and more agile while staying balanced around corners as well. The brakes also inspire confidence while driving. However, higher speeds do not always feel sorted and grip runs out once you push the ante further. The ride quality has been enhanced with a raised suspension which stays silent mostly on bad roads. There is some bounce and vibrations/road noise in the cabin although the car can still take bumps and potholes seamlessly.

What is the interior like?

The interiors are refreshing and quite familiar. The key highlight is the 8-inch touch screen infotainment unit with metallic brackets for the vents and also behind the steering wheel. The digital instrument cluster looks inspired by BMW while there are digital readouts for engine rpm and speed. The Turbo version comes with a fully-black interior theme and red accents. The front seats are big and cool, offering reasonable comfort as well. There is also the connected BlueLink app from Hyundai which offers a variety of functions. There is voice command, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and also onboard navigation. However, legroom is not that impressive at the back and the backseat is not as comfortable as well. Headroom may also be an issue for taller passengers. Yet, there is a neat reclining function with good thigh support. The USB charging point, rear AC vent, and manual rear blind are good additions to the package. The top-end trim gets a sunroof with wireless charging, traction control, ESC, cruise control, rear and front parking sensors, and hands-free boot release.

Tech and Infotainment

There is an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and navigation. There is the BlueLink app, enabling functions like remote start, real-time fuel status, remote air conditioning, door lock/unlock, live tyre pressure data, real-time location, SOS, and more. Top-end trims also get cruise control and wireless charging, along with the hands-free boot release feature.

Safety Equipment

The top-end trim has six airbags while other safety features include ISOFIX child anchorage points, child lock, seat belt warning, speed sensing door locks, over-speed warning, anti-theft engine immobilizer, flashing emergency brake light, traction control, ESC, and a lot more.

Which variant to buy?

You can choose from five variants of the Verna. The top-end SX (O) Turbo trim is appealing although the automatic SX variant gives you the highest value for your money. The top-end SX (O) may be taken in the diesel-AT or petrol-CVT versions if you are not on a budget. The entry-level S Variant only has a petrol-manual configuration and is decently packed with safety features and other infotainment. The S+ only gives you bigger steel wheels and a few other additions. The SX is costlier but it gets more equipment including the rear camera, auto-dimming inside the rearview mirror, automatic projector headlamps, and more. The top-end SX (O) is the costliest proposition and gets LED headlamps, the premier touch screen infotainment unit, BlueLink, more safety features, and so on. The Turbo is only a nominal sum away from the SX (O) and gets aesthetic tweaks and then some other additions.

Which cars compete in this segment?

The Hyundai Verna takes on the Skoda Slavia, Volkswagen Virtus, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, and the Honda City in its segment. Its main rival is the Honda City, which gets equally desirable features as the Verna. All in all, the Verna makes for a good proposition with its feature list and some nifty additions, although its price point is not as different from the Honda City and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. All three cars offer reasonable competition to each other in the segment. The Verna has a slightly more unique design and a sportier turbo engine option to vouch for.

Verdict (Value for Money)

The new Verna is a value proposition for those seeking a driver’s car. The turbo engine is a delight to drive, while the others are refined and smooth. The Verna can be a great chauffeur-driven car as well. The Verna rides and drives better this time, with more equipment and the same stylish design. However, it starts at the costlier end of the segment and this could be the only deterrent for those looking for the right midsized sedan in the country.

Final Verdict on New Verna

The Verna is reloaded and back. Is there enough here to impress? Yes. Don't get us wrong there could have been more - if you want to be greedy! But for the most part. The car remains one of the most modern, relevant, connected offerings with a huge array of variants to fit many budgets. And a lot of the equipment is standard across variants. The Toyota Yaris has failed to make a dent in this segment, though has its merits.

People also ask For

  • Which model of Hyundai Verna is best?

There are five variants of Hyundai Verna – S, S+, SX, SX-O Turbo, and SX (O). The Verna SX automatic is the best that you can choose. You can go for the top one SX (O) in petrol or diesel.

  • How much does a Hyundai Verna cost?

Hyundai Verna S plus diesel cost 10.92 lakh Hyundai Verna SX diesel cost 12.32 lakh

  • Is Hyundai Verna a good car?

Yes, Hyundai Verna is a good car to drive and own. There is more space inside, increased boot area, there is pretty good space for internal storage. The cabin is fitted with contemporary infotainment and speed measurement. The upholstery and other fitments inside are surely quite attractive. The android enabled tech system in the cabin and the Apple car play are sure of some attraction and value. The mileage too is good in the class. It is a luxurious compact sedan.

  • Is Hyundai Verna better than Maruti Suzuki Ciaz?

These cars cannot be compared in absolute terms. The Ciaz appears to be a bigger car and it has come from the Maruti stable. That could be one of the differences. Both these cars are the best in their categories. Both have a comfortable ride. The rear seat of the Ciaz has more space and that could be an additional point added to Ciaz.

  • How reliable is Hyundai Verna?

This car is reliable in terms of road safety and driving ease. It is a premium compact sedan. Its diesel version is pretty robust. The brakes, the airbags, and other safety features are self-assuring. The car requires relatively low maintenance. It saves a lot for you in the long run. The car runs smoothly on highways and off terrain conditions thanks to its suspension and robust tyres with sound grips. You won’t feel the jolts and tumults.
